(Stephen LaPorte may have volunteered to help fill out the 501(c)3 form. He's a law student so he should be able to plow through that booklet. I'm sure he volunteered to help out with the bylaws.) 71.198.176.22 15:23, 16 May 2010 (UTC)
Draft version
[edit]I've gone ahead and typed up a draft version using the State guidelines. A lot of this stuff is legally required language, so any changes should be made after careful discussion. Geoff Plourde 20:56, 5 May 2010 (UTC)
Mutual Benefit vs. Public Benefit
[edit]I see from http://www.ehow.com/how_5637230_form-mutual-benefit-corporation-california.html that a Calif. Mutual Benefit Corporation can still be for educational purposes, and that would give us the right to, for example, support anti-DRM legislation which we would be unable to do if we were a "Public Benefit" corp. 71.198.176.22 22:30, 5 May 2010 (UTC)
However, there is some question as to whether mutual benefit corporations are (as?) tax-exempt as public benefit corporations. It seems as though they can be, but often aren't. We might want to apply (+$25)[1] even though 501(c)3 status may provide an automatic tax exemption. It's probably a good idea. 71.198.176.22 20:20, 20 May 2010 (UTC)
