Jargon translation matrix
[edit]We have Writing clearly and the administrators pay constant attention to readability, but my constant worry is jargon rather than sentence structure. Insider language is a strong tool for exclusion and discrimination (even if involuntary), while of course the blog aims at the maximum inclusion possible. Could we make a list of "forbidden words" for the blog, to help those among us that forgot what words are relatively uncommmon for a newbie? I'm thinking for instance of "rollout" and "deployment", which can be replaced simply with "enabling" (or sometimes "expansion", "activation"). --Nemo 07:01, 17 July 2014 (UTC)
How to find blog posts published with translation in a given language
[edit]Hello!
Is there is a way to find all the blog posts that have a particular language translation? I recall in the old skin there was a sort of label or tag that would bring back all the posts in a given language but that seems to be lost now and I find it rather difficult to find posts in a given language without opening every one of them.
Thanks, Lsanabria (talk) 13:58, 25 April 2016 (UTC)
- Hi Lsanabria, I apologize for missing your post at the time you made it. The closest equivalent that I'm aware of is the multilingual post tag, which is still there, just without an easy link. Best, Ed Erhart (WMF) (talk) 23:56, 12 January 2017 (UTC)
Image license and attribution
[edit]Did the blog stop using freely licensed images? Or why is attribution and license of the photo missing on https://wikimediafoundation.org/2018/11/09/europride-stockholm/ ? --Nemo 07:27, 19 November 2018 (UTC)
- I see it's File:LGBT user group in front of Stockholm panorama.jpg. CC-0, but provenance information doesn't harm on a blog post. --Nemo 07:31, 19 November 2018 (UTC)
- If my memory is recalling correctly, I did this because the photo was sent to me separately for use in the post. I've updated it with this information. Thank you! Ed Erhart (WMF) (talk) 15:36, 16 July 2019 (UTC)
English Wikipedia specific links
[edit][1] links an English Wikipedia policy page while discussing a German Wikipedia action, it's just confusing. Wikimedia Foundation communications are less effective when they only focus on the English Wikipedia and forget all the other Wikimedia wikis. Oversight policy is a project-neutral page and is translated in several languages. --Nemo 06:11, 13 April 2019 (UTC)
- Hi Nemo bis, see footnote two. In particular, I believed that the English Wikipedia's oversight page was more friendly than the Meta-Wiki page for non-editors. Ed Erhart (WMF) (talk) 15:34, 16 July 2019 (UTC)
License violation on the blog
[edit]It's ironic, or extremely cynical, that a post like https://wikimediafoundation.org/2019/05/29/lets-talk-about-the-north-face-defacing-wikipedia/ , where WMF accuses others of unethical conduct about photos, should be in violation of the Creative Commons license: there is no mention of the license of the photo! Nemo 19:50, 29 May 2019 (UTC)
- @Nemo bis: Thank you for your concern. However, there is a mention of the license, photographer attribution, and a link to the photo under the "Photo credits" section of the blog post. --Gregory Varnum (Wikimedia Foundation) [he/him] (talk) 22:01, 29 May 2019 (UTC)
- Or in other words, WMF is trying to debase attribution by claiming that it's fine to stack attribution for the photos used in an article entire screenfuls away from the article itself. QED. Nemo 07:34, 9 July 2020 (UTC)
Probably a silly request
[edit]Hi, i noticed title of this page is slightly incorrect.
If possible please correct. Thanks. --আফতাবুজ্জামান (talk) 18:33, 9 November 2019 (UTC)
People leaving Medium
[edit]Is there some place where I can read the stated purpose for the usage of Medium.com by some WMF employees? It's been a while, so it would be time for assessment.
Meanwhile:

- Signal v Noise exits Medium by Basecamp
- Ending our Medium integration by write.as

Our Definition of What is a Blog
(It's so off-brand, to put Wikimedia communications on a website which is in the business of paywalling... But I'm willing to consider other priorities.) Nemo 07:54, 9 July 2020 (UTC)
