Talk:Wikimania 2022/Scholarships/Indic MediaWiki Developers User Group
Add topicHello Applicant, Thank you very much for applying for Wikimania 2022 Affiliate Grant. Here are some questions about your proposal - at the moment the budget is quite high for a 12-person event. Would you please provide some supporting documents/links for your application? (Links with flight search/links for the hotel?) It would help us review your applicationǃ Thank you very muchǃ
- Hi @Venuslui:, Hope you are doing good. To share more context behind the event and planning. Although it is a local meetup, our event is more of a semi-national/regional-level event. Since India has many languages, we would like to organize a cross-community hackathon. In India, technical contributors are usually associated with one or more language communities. By making sure that we have participation from 6-8 language communities, we will make sure that there is enough representation from across the country. As the goal of our affiliate is an outreach to the technical community in India, this cross-community socialization between developers is crucial for that. We feel Wikimania events are a great way to do that.
- Our participants will be reaching Bangalore on Aug 11th from various places of India, So we have made a search on the travel tickets (dated: Aug 11 - Aug 14) and drafted the budget. The table below gives a brief idea of the flights and their costs.
Sl Travel Route Costs (Roundtrip) Supporting Links 1 Delhi - Bangalore 11,745 RS Google Flights: DL-BLR 2 Mumbai - Bangalore 9,223 RS Google Flights: BOM-BLR 3 Hyderabad - Bangalore 8,117 RS Google Flights: HYD-BLR 4 Kolkata - Bangalore 10,732 RS Google Flights: CCU-BLR
- Apart from these flights, participants may be required to travel from their hometowns to the nearby airports by Bus/Train so it might cost some amount. Considering all of these, we have drafted our budget of 12k per participant for travel.
- While coming to Accommodation, CIS-A2K had organised an MWT Training (Mediawiki) in Bangalore (https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/CIS-A2K/Events/MediaWiki_Training/2019) a couple of years ago at Jai Mahal Palace, Bangalore and the hotel costs for Accommodation including breakfast are around 5k per room (Two Participants), We also did a bit of search on the other hotels and the below table gives a brief idea on the hotels and their costs including breakfast.
Sl Hotel Costs Supporting Links 1 Jayamahal Palace 4,499 RS Booking.com: Jayamahal Palace 2 ibis Bengaluru 3,998 RS Google travel: ibis Bengaluru City Centre
- Additionally, we will have to pay for meeting space and Internet/WiFi for the participants.
Hi @Venuslui: and Team, as our team has been thinking about increasing the participation for our event, we have a follow-up comment. We will essentially be organizing a local meetup with some scholarships for national participants. Since India is a huge country, the developers are based across India, some travel and accomodation is unavoidable. To really enable good participation for the hackathon, we will need a mix of both new contributors and experienced contributors who can guide the newcomers. So we will be inviting new contributors in and around Bengaluru, and invite upto 6-8 developers from across the country in addition to the organizers to make a successful Wikimania local meetup, with focus on technical spaces, which is the focus and scope of our affiliate. Here is our revised budget plan for 20 participants. The total is same as before, but we adjusted costs and units to accomodate more people.
We plan to organise sessions for newcomers on (in addition the ones already on Wikimania program, if not covered in the main program):
- Introduction to Wikimedia.
- Wikimedia Technical Spaces.
- Bug tracker: Phabricator.
- Code review system: Gerrit.
- Mediawiki, Extensions.
- Tools.
- Sharing Opportunities for New Developers in the Wikipedia Community.
Let us know if we can edit the already proposed budget on the grant page or if this comment is fine
