Language support for Wikimania 2015

[edit]

I have worked on a few articles related to Wikimania 2015, so here are my views on what languages Wikimedia should focus on in terms of translation and providing support to local participants.

It goes without saying that the most important two languages are Spanish and English. However Wikimania should also be inclusive to Mexico City's immigrant and expatriate groups. By going through the international schools I know there are important French-speaking (French school), German-speaking (German and Swiss schools), and Japanese (Japanese school) expatriate communities. There is also a Korean community that has an ethnic quarter in Mexico City. Therefore in addition to Spanish and English, other important languages include French, German, Japanese, and Korean.

Now, what indigenous Mexican languages should Wikimania Mexico City cater to in order to include rural, low income indigenous Mexicans in our event? I will ask Mexican Wikimedians on their opinions on this matter. WhisperToMe (talk) 13:33, 23 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hola WhisperToMe, encontré esta nota En la ciudad de México se hablan 59 idiomas originarios, algo vieja, pero puede dar una idea de los hablantes de lenguas indígenas en la Ciudad de México.

Los diez idiomas originarios más hablados en el Distrito Federal

Thank you for the list! I am aware classical Nahuatl (NAH) has a Wikipedia and I found Mazahua, Mixtec, Otomi, and Tlaxcala-Puebla Nahuatl all have incubator pages. I wonder if Wikimania can be used as a chance to get them into the project space. WhisperToMe (talk) 20:13, 23 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

"I have worked on a few articles related to Wikimania 2015, so here are my views on what languages Wikimedia should focus on in terms of translation and providing support to local participants." the answer is on all or as much as it could be possible :). Last wikimanias had wikis with Extension:Translate installed and volunteers did translations. Will the 2015's have a wiki? Sure it would be good to find some volunteers for local indigenous languages. --Base (talk) 11:17, 24 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

As far as I'm aware, yes Wikimania 2015 will have a wiki. From what I've seen in the past, they don't tend to get created until a year before the applicable Wikimania, so it's a little early as of now. Extension:Translate is a great piece of software and has served the Wikimania 2014 wiki well. The two main problems I've noted have been that translations can become out-of-date quickly, with volunteers being unable to keep up. It would also be helpful if there was greater awareness among editors, particularly among WMF and chapter staff as well as Wikimania volunteers, of Extension:Translate and how it works. While only a local translation admin can mark a particular revision of a page for translation, anyone can propose a page for translation or add translation tags to text they add. What the organizers may do is that if a language is marked as a priority they can intentionally seek out translations in that language. I.E. one organizer going on the Japanese Wikipedia asking for translations in Japanese so the Japanese community of Mexico City may participate in Wikimania 2015. Recruitment

[edit]

Wikimedia should recruit for users from the high school (preparatoria) and university levels. So in addition to UNAM, El Colegio de Mexico, etc. Wikimedia should encourage those from Mexico City's high schools to contribute.

Especially valuable potential Wikimedians:

  • May have knowledge of indigenous Mexican languages and therefore can contribute to those Wikimedia projects. They can help poor rural indigenous villagers not only use Wikipedia but also contribute to it. I wonder if there are indigenous languages spoken in the rural villages in the south of Tlalpan borough. If so, recruiting from en:Escuela Preparatoria Tlalpan II "Otilio Montaño" in San Miguel Topilejo may be a good idea.
  • Have knowledge of French, German, and/or Japanese in addition to Spanish and English, so it may be valuable to recruit high school students from the following international schools: en:Colegio Alemán Alexander von Humboldt, en:Lycée Franco-Mexicain, en:Liceo Mexicano Japonés, and en:Colegio Suizo de México
  • Those attending British and American schools in Mexico City may also have excellent command of English and can contribute to Mexico-related articles on ENWiki which may be underdeveloped

Wikimania on this wiki, and reports

[edit]

Hello, I would actually prefer to use Meta as wiki for Wikimanias, instead of one new wiki in every year. Also, is there a general place to list reports (blog posts etc.) about Wikimanias? Ziko (talk) 17:12, 30 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

You can add them to see also or to Category:Wikimania 2015. --Nemo 21:30, 30 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
No, I mean no files, but links to personal blogs, wiki pages etc. Where is a dedicated space so that we find them back after years? Ziko (talk) 22:39, 30 July 2015 (UTC)Reply
Who mentioned files? The place is Wikimania 2015, add a section if "See also" is not appealing to you. --Nemo 08:14, 31 July 2015 (UTC)Reply

Budget

[edit]

Thanks a lot for publishing the financial information, that's invaluable even if it's still a work in progress. I hope more Wikimedia entities will contribute details at Wikimania 2015/Budget (and the same for Wikimania 2014). Nemo 18:30, 26 February 2016 (UTC)Reply
