[edit]other conventions / international activities / sport championships
[edit]Possibilities to organise Wikimania adjacent (pre- and/or post- convention) to other major (international) activities such as w:World Social Forum or w:European Social Forum or Sports - (Brabo 21:50, 4 June 2006 (UTC))
- in 2007 is in January 2007: WSF in Nairobi (Kenia)
- in 2007 is in June 2007: G8-meeting and also EU-meeting in ..... (Germany)
- in July 2008 are in Sydney (Australia): World Youth Days (WYD 2008)
- in August 2008 are in Beijng (China): Olympic Games 2008
- ...
- ==> Try to organise Wikimania 2008 either in Sydney (Aus.) or Beijng (China) and choose for Wikimania 2007 a city not in the same hemisphere as the 'proposed' one for 2008. - (Brabo 21:27, 17 September 2006 (UTC))
- That's not terribly practical, as events mean higher prices at hotels, restaurants, yada yada yada. -- Zanimum 17:06, 29 September 2006 (UTC)
Location
[edit]I think somewhere in Europe or Africa would geographically be a good choice for 2008, after 2006 in America and 2007 in East Asia. I hope there will be some good bids from those continents again. --Boivie 08:41, 25 September 2006 (UTC)
- The competition is not judged by location, solely. -- Zanimum 17:05, 29 September 2006 (UTC)
WikiMania 2008 in Los Angeles, CA, USA
[edit]To the organizers - Please hold a future "WikiMania" conference/convention in the United States, preferably in San Diego, Los Angeles, or San Francisco, California, USA, Earth. Posted by Vid2vid 17:20, 26 April 2007 (UTC) // current posting 199.106.103.254 00:28, 21 June 2007 (UTC)
- If you are a Wikimedian, and are interested in having a conference in California, I would encourage you to wrangle like-minded Wikimedians, and organize such a bid. That said, all North American bids this year are on the eastern seaboard. -- Zanimum 16:10, 5 September 2007 (UTC)
Who Can Attend?
[edit]Do you have to have to be a left winger to attend, since no other views are valid? 12.145.177.110 18:32, 15 May 2007 (UTC)
- Note that Jimmy Wales is a big fan of Ayn Rand, who according to WP, felt the only moral system of governance was "laissez-faire capitalism." I assure you that there are many, many other right-wing and centrist Wikipedians. -- Zanimum 16:08, 5 September 2007 (UTC)
Money
[edit]Do we have the money to pay for that? --62.134.227.91 15:33, 7 June 2007 (UTC)
- A convention, we have for three or so years so far. We get sponsors for the event. -- Zanimum 16:05, 5 September 2007 (UTC)

Vienna
[edit]It should be in Vienna (Austria). A perfect place would be the UN city as it stands for freedom which wiki also stands for? Dominic
- I think that is a very cool idea. Or maybe Sofia, Bulgaria. :) Africa doesn't sound to be a very safe place though, especially after Taiwan, where we were spoilt to complacency. I just couldn't get enough of the place. The people were beautiful, humble and helpful. Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington 14:07, 9 August 2007 (UTC)
- The conference are organized by the local people mainly, volunteering their time and energy for almost a year. It means, unless Vienna-based Wikimedians love to host the conference, no one can say "it should be". :) --Aphaia 04:34, 14 August 2007 (UTC)
