Referencing external sources

The doc says "Data in Wikidata will also be annotated with its provenance: it does not simply state the population of Germany, but it also requires a source to be given for the data." How is data invalidation be handled, and will there be any export mechanism for the referenced data? See also [Wikidata-l] Import from external sources. — Jeblad 10:59, 18 March 2012 (UTC)

Good questions, and the answer depends a little on what you exactly mean. First: if, with referenced data, you mean some external source, we will not provide exports for that. If you mean statements that have references, yes, we will export this data - both the statements as well as their references.

Data invalidation is not handled automatically, but it should be rather easy to write bots that list statements with invalidated references so that Wikidata editors can take a look. --Denny Vrandečić (WMDE) (talk) 12:31, 18 March 2012 (UTC)

My writing was not very clear. The referenced data, will it be exported from the external source and imported into Wikidata if any kind of detector invalidates the previously loaded data. Ie the first of your two alternatives I believe. It could be done for a lot of simple cases… — Jeblad 12:58, 18 March 2012 (UTC)

Both exporting from external sources and importing data into Wikidata is out of scope for the Wikidata development. We will provide an API for entering data though, and then the community may choose how to use this. --Denny Vrandečić (WMDE) (talk) 14:07, 20 March 2012 (UTC)
