Why different versions for different languages where data is the same? A sportsmen has the same amount of gold medals in German and English! --Flominator 20:25, 6 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

It's a think I want to be disputed. But at the End, different languages have different words for a lot of things. And chinese- or arabic-language people have surely much bigger problems to understand english "koine" the we germans. Marcus Cyron 11:36, 7 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Have you heard of the Wikilists proposal? I think other wikipedias don't have that much of a problem with lists as de: does... --Gnom, 09:06, 7 Novemver 2007 (CET)

I don't know much enough about other language Versions, because of that I ask here. About Wikilists I read here the first time. But if the project more than two years not startet it seems, we need a new start. But at the end for me the name is not important, if such a project will be startet. Are you aware of the Wikidata project? It's been around for some years now, but not much has been going on lately. Which level of complexity do you have in mind? Do you just suggest to separate "boring" lists and data collections from encyclopedic texts? If yes, this is mainly an administrative question and easy to implement. Or is this a proposal about data storage/representation with appropriate technology? Some advanced features that crossed my mind:

  • Calculation. For a list of population densities, one would only have to enter the population and the area, and the output would be calculated.
  • Relations accross tables. Data should be modeled as a relational database. E.g. a table of Olympic gold medal winners shouldn't contain country names, but a reference to the country table. So we could make queries like "Show me all gold medal winners from countries that have become independent after 1990".
  • Semantic data. E.g. a list of countries will not only have a column with the population number, it will also contain metadata that tells us (or the computer) that this column contains population information. This would allow queries like "Show me all countries and all subnational entities with a lower population than Berlin" or "Show me any item that has about the weight of a coconut". --Zumbo 11:05, 7 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
My "Problem" is, that at de we often have big problems with lists - but they have important Informations. Such informations shouldn't getting lost. My English isn't the best, but Wikidata looks to me as an very different project. I don't think about technical datas. I think about lists of sportive events and results, of link-lists to special thmes, bibliographies to special themes or of works by authors. And so on. All what could be important to "mankind". I wont build frontiers. Articles with text blocks ofcourse depending to Wikipedia (or other projects). Marcus Cyron 11:36, 7 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

In general I think it´s a phantastic idea. Unfortunately my knowledge and skills are both to small. I really don´t know, how to organize, construct and handle data-systems. But what I know definitely is, that a lot of unordered data lay around in different wikis, and my phantasy starts to dance, imagine, how great it would be to have a common data-base (and with clear graffic adds...). Dear people, who know how to help, do it. Thanks, user:Lost Espandrillo (wikipedia.de)

Zumbo's point is pretty important. There is no sense in creating a project to collect and list data without the possibility to make queries. People would ask for that. So this should be included from the very beginning because it is much harder to implement at a later stage. You really need a good database management system for this kind of project. --Rosentod 14:29, 7 November 2007 (UTC)

Good idea 84.56.63.87 10:25, 19 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

This is a great Idea. It would help people find information without reading a whole article. Just to prove that this would be great I will put up some example pages Here . Wikidata would be a great new way to display info. Desalvionjr 20:40, 30 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Actually the idea is dead. It seems, there are not a importance is seen by the comunity. Marcus Cyron 19:01, 7 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
The idea is not dead but we need to solve technical problems and most of us don't have a big experience about programming stuf. In the french wikipedia we try to create some interfaces in order to access to data stored in the toolserver (see here for an example) then we want to create a new version of the metadata based on the infobox to avoid data duplication (see here in french. This project developed a new version of the infobox called modbox for "modular box"). The problem is the storage of data: now we use the tool of Kolossos for the extraction but the direct data access from WP is not possible and we have to create interfaces on the toolserver.
The best solution is en:DBpedia but this project uses a complex langage for the query and direct access from WP is not resolved. We need to think about one way to store data in WP, then once we define this we need to find a way to extract the data from WP or from another database. Snipre 08:08, 8 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

About Wikidata

[edit]

If, as explained above, you would like to store the data in a relational database, and be able to query and filter the data in some way, then I also think that Wikidata would be a good start, or at least it contains bricks that could be reused.

The basic idea of Wikidata is to have forms with several fields in a wikipage (instead of one big field where all the page is written). At the moment, Wikidata is too much "Omegawiki oriented", but if a programmer is willing to work on "Wikidata (2)", I think we could try to see what could be common to "Wikidata (2)" and the current "Wikidata" and separate it to what is specific to OmegaWiki. I am currently a (the) programmer of OmegaWiki (Wikidata). I did not create it, I just joined years later when nobody else would take care of it, but I have now a good understanding of the code. So, if anybody wants to discuss about it, you can contact me.

For example, a bibliography is a list of books, just like a concept is a list of translations in OmegaWiki. I think this is very similar. --Kip 14:15, 6 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
