Multiple metadata systems?

Eloquence, have you been in touch with the devs who worked on a core metadata system during the Wikimania Hacking Days? (cf. brion)

What should this 'review' phase be there for? We are continuously running on entirely new software. We are currently running 1.6a so I would say we are used to running experimental software. GerardM 00:00, 10 September 2005 (UTC)

Having parallel projects running on different software

I wonder what would happen if we simultaneously had many different Wikipedia databases running different types of community/social software during a trial period... This doesn't seem like a great idea to me, and I would much rather see new elaborate user-preferences options that let users turn new features on and off, but I am curious to hear arguments in support of it. +sj | Translate the Quarto |+

I do not have a clue what you are talking about.

As to user preferences, the data design for Ultimate Wiktionary allows for two things; stating the proficiency in a language and an interest in a language. Both options are optional. Showing an interest in a language works as a filter. Without this filter it is assumed that a user is interested in all languages. For anonymous users, the language chosen for the user interface should be the languages of the browser. When this is not observable, English will be chosen; it being the modernday lingua franca. Bot for merging content

Who is working on the bot software for merging in new changes from the current wiktionaries? Is that code public? +sj | Translate the Quarto |+

Work is done on a bot that analyses content and breaks it down in components. These components will need to be parsed into the UW datamodel. Some metadata is saved; specifically the permalink. This can be used to do subsequent passes. This bot is part of the pywikipedia framework and Polyglot is the main man. GerardM 00:00, 10 September 2005 (UTC)

What should an upgraded Wiktionary be?

If a new project/interface is to replace Wiktionary, it is very important that "what the project aims to be" is not finalized without an active community-wide discussion. The burden of creating such a discussion is traditionally on those advocating change.

So: What should such a project aim to be? to do? Who would the users be, what kinds of content would it contain, how would that content be used by other Wikimedia projects, by other projects in the rest of the world, by site visitors?

When a project/interface is to replace Wiktionary you may be right. From my perspective this is a completely wrong aproach. Ultimate Wiktionary is a project that may replace Wiktionaries then again it may not. Important is that it will be the users, editiors and communities who decide what makes sense to them and they do not need to decide in the same manner. At this moment in time most people wait and will see what UW will be like in due time. As more and more functionality will be rolled out, it becomes increasingly possible to make an informed opinion of what UW is or will be like.

When you want to know what UW is intended to be, you can read many articles on the subject. What it will ultimately be? We are working towards its first version. I am sure that more uses will be found and more changes will be omplemented before it is a truly Ultimate Wiktionary. As to what its community will be like, I expect it to be different from the current Wiktionary communities because all these people with all these different backgrounds will all be working on the same data and they will all be working towards the same goal. User Interface

It's good to hear about the UW. In Thai Wiktionary^[1], we were planning to revamp the Thai Wikitionary until today that I found out about the UW. Since we don't have much words now, it seems to us that we can start the UW easily (total ~1,000 pages, 200 project pages, 60 words)

Our concern is that what's the user interface of the UW? Unlike the English Wiktionary, we created the user-oriented page in Thai Wiktionary. It has four sections which are Search box (top-left), Did you know (top-right), Browsing Index (bottom-left), and Things to do (bottom-right, for newcomers). We believe that many people just want to search words though.

Different practices of template uses

As I use English, simple Enlgish, French, and Chinese Wiktionaries, there are different practices of template uses. This is making using multiple subdomains difficult. Perhaps some templates should eventually have better unified formats.--Jusjih 18:46, 10 February 2007 (UTC)
