Medicine Translation Project Community Organizing

[edit]

I'd like to ask of you to take a look at a Wikimedia IEG grant a few of us over at Wikiproject Medicine are behind. You may likely have heard of the translation of medical articles that is being done (if not please take a look at w:Wikipedia:WikiProject Medicine/Translation Task Force). The goal of the grant is to get the translation and integration process to run smoothly, and to assess which articles are the most important to translate. We've come far at w:Wikipedia:WikiProject Medicine/Translation task force/RTT, but to get further we feel there is need for some form of organization, preferably by someone who can devote significant time to the task.

I'm very hopeful that I can provide real benefit with this grant, as there are so many articles on Wikipedia that could help people all over the world.
It's even more important when you take into account drives such as Wikipedia Zero, and readers who might not have access to any medical information at all can benefit.

Please take a look at the grant page: Medicine Translation Project Community Organizing, and add a comment or give your ideas on how we can best benefit the other Wikipedias.
Thanks, -- CFCF (talk) 21:19, 2 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

Content translators needed for a user study on article recommendations

[edit]

Hi!

The Design Research team at the Wikimedia Foundation is seeking volunteers to participate in a series of interviews about translating articles on Wikipedia. The goal of the study is to understand how experienced translators find and select articles to translate from one Wikipedia to another. The results of this study will help improve automated article recommendation tools for content translators.

We would like to speak to editors who have experience translating articles across Wikipedia languages. The only requirements for participating in this study are:

1) the editor must have previously translated at least one Wikipedia article to or from English and one of the following languages: Catalan, Farsi, French, Italian, Spanish, or Swahili.*

2) the editor must be available to speak with a WMF researcher over Google Hangout; if you haven't used Google Hangouts before, don't worry, we will walk you through it. Your participation will take no preparation, and all you have to do is show up at the Google Hangout with your laptop/desktop ready to go.

Each study session will be approximately 50 minutes in length, and can be scheduled at a time that works best for the participants. If you're interested in participating, please send a message with your availability (be sure to note your time zone) to designresearch@wikimedia.org. Thank you for helping us improve content translation!

Sincerely,

Samantha Becker & Jonathan Morgan

Wikimedia Design Research

*These are the languages that we are testing the new recommendation tools in initially.

Translation extension

[edit]

May we add this page to translation extencion? I think it will be the best way to support Translation of the week page in another languages. Iniquity (talk) 21:05, 30 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, I saw this message earlier but failed to reply. I'm not sure why you think the Translate extension may help this initiative, can you clarify? The "other languages" header points to equivalent (but different) pages in various languages, rather than translations. Creating additional translations of the identical content may produce duplication without benefits.
What are your goals with making this page (or others) translatable? Nemo 12:21, 13 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Nemo bis: A lot of pages All pages from the "other languages" header are outdated: 2005, 2015, 2012... This extension can help to update 'this' pages. Of cource, old pages must be deleted after all. Iniquity (talk) 12:29, 13 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Shizhao and Deryni: ping avtive users. Iniquity (talk) 12:01, 17 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
I noted that EnWp's TOW was not listed at Wikidata, so I added it. May this help in any way, regarding this particular problem!? Anyway we need more than one good idea, to bring more writers to our TOW-project. More writers bring more diversity and that will make the project sparkle. Deryni (talk) 13:18, 17 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
or add to mw:Extension:ContentTranslation?--Shizhao (talk) 13:36, 17 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
I think it will help. And yep, Im talking about mw:Extension:ContentTranslation. Iniquity (talk) 15:31, 17 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Deryni and Shizhao: So, what do you think about mw:Extension:ContentTranslation? It will be really helpful if content of this page will update auto in another languages.
I'm not familiar with the function, but it would be worth a try. We need more voters and more suggestions. Deryni (talk) 22:24, 19 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
So, we restructured the page for easy translation, and we have new pages now:

I have recreated this logo to SVG format. What do you think about it?

Iniquity (talk) 22:38, 25 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Looks good to me, especially considering that gradients went out of fashion since 2006. Though my input is not very important since I am not really involved in the project. --Base (talk) 14:48, 26 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Automate TOW templates in other wikis

[edit]

Hello, I want to talk about a bot which works in Russian Wikipedia and updates the following template: ru:Шаблон:Перевод недели. This bot takes the actual article from the template on the meta ({{TOWThisweek}}) and inserts it into certain tags <span id="id"> in the local template. You can see the source code under MIT license here: https://github.com/Facenapalm/NapalmBot/blob/master/scripts/tow.py. It would be great if someone created a new bot based on this code, since the developer does not have time for this. Iniquity (talk) 00:03, 19 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Shizhao and Deryni:, what do you think about it? :) Iniquity (talk) 20:42, 24 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Larske:I don't have enough knowledge in this matter to be sure of an opinion, but I know a wikipedian who might have. Deryni (talk) 06:42, 25 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
Good work!--Shizhao (talk) 01:17, 28 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

Ciao a tutti, Vorrei riproporre una voce scartata nel 2020. Penso di avere commesso degli errori nella presentazione della voce e penso che questo la ha un pochino penalizzata. Si può fare questa cosa oppure devo aspettare?? Grazie - Esc0fans

Hi everyone, I want to add a second time an article that didn't pass the selection in 2020. I want to do this because I did some mistakes in the description of this page. Is this possible or I have to something particular? Thank you --Esc0fans (talk) 10:49, 20 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Proposing topic limitations to the candidates

[edit]

Hello, everyone, I'm pretty sure this is going to be controversial.

After years of participation to the proposal and choice of the candidates for the TofW, I've come up to a potential problem to be solved. In order to avoid a) risks of promotion and self-promotion b) legal controversies c) recentisms d) clashing of different notability policies and guidelines in different language editions of WP, the following shouldn't be eligible:

  1. biographies of living people (BLP) and/or
  2. articles about ongoing commercial subjects and companies.

There would still be a limitless choice among geographical features, historical biographies and events, monuments, life forms, and countless other topics. What would you think? Mickey83 (talk) 06:59, 5 September 2024 (UTC)Reply
