Why Wikipedia needs more contributors

Why did you stay?

I was thinking about the questions "Why did you ever start contributing? Why did you stay? (often not the same reasons)" -- for me they were not the same, but the answer to the second question is actually about why I left Wikipedia. The answer to that should be a topic for introspection for the community at large, and specifically English Wikipedia (which was the first wiki I found, like many others). For the other wikis, the answer there provides insight for what mistakes to avoid. Addressing those concerns would be worth adding to Best practices in giving a Wikipedia presentation/Tricky questions to expect or Best practices in giving a Wikipedia presentation/Questions people always ask. I've blogged about this, and mentioned it in w:en:Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2008-05-19/Wikibooks interview, and probably elsewhere as well. If I knew how to address all this in a way that would encourage people to contribute to Wikipedia, I would share it here, but I don't.  — Mike.lifeguard | ^@en.wb 19:43, 19 May 2009 (UTC)

Hi Mike, thanks a lot for your feedback. I agree that a page about what mistakes to avoid is a very good idea. We should think about a better place than within the "best practices in public outreach" series. --Frank Schulenburg 23:04, 27 May 2009 (UTC)
