math fallbacks

[edit]

Just for my curiosity, but after the switchover, if the browser doesn’t support SVG, then what will be the fallback? LaTeX source code? someething else? (I’m thinking of text browsers in case anyone is curious..) — Al12si (talk) 03:01, 27 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

Text browsers aren’t affected – they can’t display the current PNGs either… Affected are visual browsers that don’t support SVG. According to caniuse.com, this means IE ≤8 and Android browser ≤2.3. Since the HTML is a standard <img src="..." alt="..."> (where the src="..." will now be an SVG), they should from now on display the alt text (joining text browsers), which seems to be the LaTeX source. I mean if they load Wikimedia sites at all… As far I remember, IE8 can no longer connect to WMF sites due to not supporting the required encryption protocols; probably ancient Android browsers also don’t load. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 20:44, 27 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

Odd question regarding "limited-width mode"

[edit]

I'm curious, how did we decide on a width of 1600 pixels being the minimum for the toggle? Also, I know that monitors of the same resolution can come in different sizes (for example I have 2 monitors which both have a resolution of 1280x1024, however one is larger than the other in screen size) so I would assume research has been done to determine that the majority of monitors that are at least NULLx1600 (not using 0 since, well, that wouldn't really be a usable monitor and i Have no clue what the general height is) are considered widescreen? ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 20:33, 28 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Blaze Wolf I'm not certain, but I believe this is related to the size at which Specialpages currently auto-expand. The main comments I've seen are at phab:T319449#8346630 and at phab:T319449#8411690. I've personally commented there suggesting a reduction to 1400px, but there may be factors I'm missing.
