Ad: New users filter point

[edit]

@Quiddity (WMF): Currently the point is coded like follows: In {{int:Recentchanges}}, you can now hide the log entries... This is, however, incompatible with languages with more complex grammar.

For example Polish version of {{int:Recentchanges}} is "Ostatnie zmiany" which is, "Recent changes" in nominative. The natural translation of that fragment would look like: Na Ostatnich zmianach, możesz... or Na stronie ostatnich zmian, możesz..., though. Both of them use other grammatical cases of that name and they cannot be simply obtained using {{GRAMMAR:}}. Is it necessary to store the special page name as a variable? If so, can the variable be equal to {{#special:RecentChanges}}? I think this form is used more often in Tech News and is easier to fit into a natural sentence (at least for Polish). @Msz2001 Thank you! I'm never certain about how much to try to automate for the benefit of languages which don't get translated at all (I believe the strings give them at least a hint of what to look for‽). Plus I sometimes forget about the specific options like that one. I've done as you suggested, and appreciate the reminder and the details. :) Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 17:27, 28 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

Javascript dependency

[edit]

I just discovered that hiding new users is dependent on having the Javascript UI enabled (the non-Javascript interface does not have a corresponding option). I think this is a point that should have been mentioned, since (IMO) technical users are probably actually more likely to turn Javascript off. Al12si (talk) 00:14, 20 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

Good thought. I even created the initial page mw:No-JavaScript notes so this is a broader-issue I'm somewhat aware of, and try to highlight and teach people about when I can! (i.e. I know a few editors who choose to disable JavaScript, and I try to help advocate for them).
That said, there are a number of variables (such as skins, user-preferences, user-scripts, gadgets, browser-extensions, browser-settings, etc) that may affect the details of announcements about new changes to the defaults (like this one), and it's not really practical for me to research each of those, nor for Tech News to extensively detail & translate them. Plus, as you mentioned, it's perhaps the technical users who are more likely to intentionally disable JavaScript, and in my opinion it's up to them to understand the ramifications of that choice.
Thoughts? Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 00:38, 22 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
