Brion Vibber is setting up an update service companies such as Gurunet can use to fetch updated pages from Wikipedia or other projects in relatively close to real time. This provides a way to fetch all updated articles since time X, where, ideally, time X is fairly recent.

At the very least, we should have an allpages feed. This would allow sites such as OneLook and MetaWiki to index us properly. However, I think it should include redirects. If someone searches for, say, w:Cougar on one of these engines, Wikipedia would return no results if redirects were excluded. -- Stephen Gilbert 17:58 Oct 31, 2002 (UTC)

It would be nice to have the summary field as an RSS <description>. It could also be nice to have a separate RSS feed that only contains newly created articles that are longer than 400 characters, with the first 150 characters of the article in the <description>. This would make for a slower, more weblog-like flow of articles worthy to read.

RSS/Atom feed?

I could have sworn I saw a link to an RSS or Atom feed in the "toolbox" while on some page earlier today. Though it could have been on meta.wikipedia.org. Either way, I can't find again what page I saw that on, and so haven't had the chance to see what it was an RSS feed of! -- protactin 19:50, 2 Jun 2004 (UTC)

RSS Feeds

The two (I think) feeds available are linked to in the sidebar of Recent Changes and Newpages[[User:Sverdrup|User:Sverdrup/sig]] 19:52, 19 Aug 2004 (UTC)

It would only be neat if you found a way to make sure only you could read it-- otherwise anyone could see what any given user had on their watchlist. You could use some kind of authentication, of course-- cookies or HTTP auth-- but AFAIK most RSS readers don't support authentication anyway. Marnanel 07:21, 22 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Yes, that's exactly why I was coming to this page and looking it over. I'd think it would have to be something run from a cron job, with a new script that would import the feed. Alternatively, it could be done in a PHP script that would run whenever you went to the appropriate URL, and then create or update pages for that feed. After the update, you'd go to the page with the actual content (perhaps redirected from the updating page?). But I don't know PHP anywhere near well enough to do it myself, yet. -- John Owens 21:03, 2005 August 4 (UTC)

I found some extensions listed over at Category:Mediawiki Extensions that do the jobs. The lates seems to be User:Mafs/RSS, which is based on User:Rdb78/RSS, based on Duesentrieb's RSS (didn't find a link right away), based on User:Mutante/RSSFeed. (Starting to sound like I'm reading from the Old Testament here!) Anyway, Mafs' version seems to do just what's wanted; I didn't try the older versions at all. -- John Owens 20:56, 2005 August 6 (UTC)

Watchlist Feeds

As I understand it all wikimedia sites were upgraded to 1.4 in december. Wasn't having feeds for watchlists supposed to be in this release? Does anyone know when this will be available. I have watchlists on about 6 different wikimedia projects and i'd love to have them all in one folder in my rss reader. Jacoplane 00:45, 25 Mar 2005 (UTC)

No, such support hasn't been written yet. Since watchlists are private this requires some sort of authentication or non-privacy opt-in system which makes it additional work. More generally, watchlists are slow and putting them in regularly pulled RSS feeds could be a burden on the servers at present. --brion 03:23, 25 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Version conflict

Well, I don't know how else to describe this. While the software states that only character set utf8 can be used since version 1.5.0 (I am using 1.5.2). FeedValidator (http://www.feedvalidator.org/check?url=http://www.kgv.nl/wiki/index.php?title=Speciaal:Recentchanges&feed=rss) states that utf8 is out of the question. Script to generate RSS feeds

Recent changes feed coverage

What time range do the recent changes feeds return? The last minute? The last 50 changes? How hard does a request to this feed hit the server? 202.37.75.101 20:37, 5 January 2006 (UTC)

Page update notification

Are there any switches or methods for I am looking for a way to be alerted when a page has been updated. In case of an article history, it is possible to monitor any changes via RSS. It is possible to be alerted when new pages are added. However, I can't find a way to use RSS to alert me when any page has been updated. Thank you for any comments/suggestions. Feed-Bug

I have a stupid bug with rss. When following the link to RSS or ATOM, it gives me a "browser-error", because the feed starts with two blank lines... this error even stays, after updating the wikisoftware (i have it since mediawiki 1.4.something)... Reading the feed with a feed-reader-program (NetNewsWire) runs without any problem... Does anyone have an idea ? --Produnis 08:43, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

I found this bug here... its because of blank lines in LocalSettings.php oder in some of the "extensions" (which are included to LocalSettings). Getting rid of THEM made me getting rid of this bug... --Produnis 08:58, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

Feeds on Private Wiki?

We have some wikis here that are set up to be private (only authenticated users are allowed to view pages). This seems to totally break the feed mechanism, because the reader can only get to the login page if (we theorize) the reader supports cookies (i.e., a browser-based reader.) Does anyone know a solution to this? It's a real irritation that our users of the private wiki can't get any feeds from it. (Nweinstock 22:57, 10 November 2006 (UTC))

Here's a solution : use feeds names with md5 encoded password inside of it (or to be more safe, you can add random characters instead of the md5 of the password), so by example /feed_a5787c23d4c354.xml for feed.xml. The RedBurn 19:48, 25 January 2007 (UTC)

RSS icon not appearing on Turkish Wikipedia
