Now that Wikimedia has been accepted as organization for Soc 2007. Can we post our ideas here?

Idea: Create a small application that hooks into a text-to-speech system and generates audio files on demand (which are compressed as ogg). I think the best results may come from hooking into the Mac 10.5 system, as that recently had an impressive demo, but the hardware requirement (a Mac) may sour some people.

Deletion queue system

How would this compare to the existing-but-unused workflow extensions (Tasks extension by Magnus and Tasks Extension originally by Aran Deltac)? It seems that there are many tasks which could be simplified if a proper framework were in place, and maybe this would be a good place to do that. HTH HAND —Phil | Talk 17:22, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

Not really related, IMHO. The Tasks extension basically made additional talk pages, which is great for what it is. :) What I'd like to see here is an actual queuing system that can be reviewed wiki-wide and, most importantly, which actually can make things happen in a scheduled queue.

For instance, instead of hoping someone will go through and actually delete the thousands of images in a deletion queue, they'll actually be deleted on schedule.

And instead of hoping that the uploader sees a message and finds out where the giant page is and figures out where the discussion is hidden and manages to get a comment in, they'll actually be notified and get a direct link to the discussion and have the option of kicking it from the queue for further discussion and work in an orderly, regular fashion. --brion 14:04, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

AutoSave Option

When creating a new article or editing current article, if by any means there is a power failure then all of your works are lost. this is a complete disaster, if there could be a system which autosaves a instances at certain interval of time for that user (or for that article) and show a snippet of whole edited page side by side in small pan then it would be nice experience to work with wikipedia. When I saw this I thought of maybe a 'pre-contribution' tab that had the last 25 or so things you did on whatever articles in chunks about the size of a ctrl-z action. Useful too for edit conflicts. JoeSmack 15:47, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

If someone creates new idea for the WikiMedia, where can they be discussed? For example, I have interesting new idea, but I think it is not acceptable to post them here.

Has anyone discussed/dismissed voting user posts up in the "discussion" section of MediaWiki page as a project idea (which I'd be glad to work on by the way)? This would require some considerable work, but I think, especially for discussions like Talk:Gauge_theory where it seems that if registered users vote on the better discussions, it may help to move some clutter to the bottom (or possibly extract it in the first place). That or any idea/work that helps make discussion of more controversial or technical topics better in general greatly interests me (and seems somewhat related to the post below). --Geet 02:51, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

That's the LiquidThreads project; it was mostly done last year but not fully integrated. There's someone already working on this, so I didn't put it on this years' list. -- brion 13:56, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

Multimedia integration

Hello,

A better use of EXIF data would be a must for Commons, i.e. rotating the image from the EXIF data. Also very helpful for Commons would be four new special pages ordering images, by size (from small to bigger, and from bigger to small), and ordering by resolution (again from small to bigger, and from bigger to small). Heuristics for vandalism

Whom should I discuss with to understand the requirements of this? The requirements inform that " Some heuristics for vandalism already exist for the IRC notification module." I would like to know more about this. I am interested in taking up this activity as GSoC project,wanted some guidance in getting started to know more about this in the implementation standpoint. How does mentoring work?

I'd like to discuss how mentoring is done: how, by whom, and where? An idea that's been mooted is to route this learning through Wikiversity (or perhaps it makes more sense on mediawiki.org itself?). On the Wikiversity idea, there's real enthusiasm there for trying to develop a learning community around developing mediawiki (see v:Topic:MediaWiki) - I'm interested in hearing what people think - questions, criticisms et al. Vandalism statistics

Along a similar vein of vandalism heuristics, something that automatically collects the data or parses the data for review like that of en:Wikipedia:WikiProject_Vandalism_studies/Study1. Media player/conversion

I think it would be good to focus on media conversion. It should be easy for everybody to upload videos in their format and let software convert it to Ogg Theora. Opera will be able to play these videos at the end of 2007 and I think Firefox will adopt the video-tag, too. So in my opinion we don't need a player in java or flash - I hope when Microsoft sees, that there are videos in Wikipedia but their users get a message "no video support, please use opera or firefox", they will follow. Decent media search for commons

It would be nice to have decent interface to search Commons. Currently big part of functionality present in any commercial media repository / stock photo agency / ... is missing.

Most notably media search function able to find images any combination of listed criteria

• selected categories and their union, intersection and exclusion (on category with subcategories)
• text in description
• size
• format
• orientation
• author/uploader
• license (or generally presence of a template)

...and present results in a nice manner, i.e. gallery of thumbnails.

Part of it is now possible thanks to commons:User:Duesentrieb/Tools, but it's scattered among several tools and not well integrated into normal commons look. --Wikimol 22:46, 23 April 2007 (UTC)

Move metadata out of article source code

Categories, interwiki links, geographical coordinates, etc. (protection status?, META name="description"?) should all be added with specialized interfaces and not be part of the article's source code. I know nothing about coding or databases, but some sort of generalized metadata framework could be set up?, and things like this built as the first example modules or whatever. — Omegatron 01:33, 30 August 2007 (UTC)
