No dedicated area for questions?
[edit]Why isn't the community encouraged to engage the candidates in answering questions? The way it is formatted as of now, if more people start asking questions as I did on the page attached to this talkpage, it would very soon overwhelm the votes cast by others.
Explanation note:
- When I posted my question for MarcoAurelio it was outside of the voting area see: https://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Stewards/Confirm/2021/MarcoAurelio&oldid=21076018
- My question was moved to the end (at the time) of the voting area here: https://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Stewards/Confirm/2021/MarcoAurelio&oldid=21076034 with edit summary: Ottawahitech there is no question section for SE, shifted to general comments section .
- It is now sitting together with the reply from MarcoAurelio smack in the middle of a sea of votes , Thanks in advance, Ottawahitech (talk) 17:20, 8 February 2021 (UTC)
- @Ottawahitech I think me and @Vermont did explain to you for this issues. Per my talkpage and your talkpage. If I am not wrong @Nosebagbear also raised a similar concerns about no questioning. I think the best is to review this after the SE is completed, if I am not wrong Electcom is aware of this issue and maybe next year we might have a question phase? - @Camouflaged Mirage: It actually is two related areas - 1 is a dedicated question time, the other is a dedicated space for questions so they don't sit in the middle of de-facto votes. Obviously the former can't be retrofitted while it's in progress, but question sub-sections could be added to each reconfirmation subpage given there's still weeks to run Nosebagbear (talk) 17:55, 8 February 2021 (UTC)
- @Nosebagbear True. But I see for the other stewards confirmations you and some other users also asked questions. Well let me flag this up to Electcom. If I recalled correctly, there isn't dedicated subsection for the previous, I think we need Electcom inputs here. Camouflaged Mirage (talk) 18:00, 8 February 2021 (UTC)

- Ottawahitech, these are not candidates. These are current stewards who go through a yearly confirmation process at the same time of steward elections. For candidates, there is a questions page, with questions for all candidates and individual questions. For confirmations, there are very rarely large amounts of questions, so that sort of thing is generally just on the confirm page. Vermont (talk) 18:36, 8 February 2021 (UTC)
- @ Vermont: Thanks for clarifying.
- I don't believe I have seen other WM (wikimedia foundation)-related elections that allow the community to comment on all existing functionaries annually. This is great in my opinion. I do believe, however, that an area dedicated for asking questions would improve both the quality of the Stewards, and reduce the Toxicity in the community. Official appeal procedure for globally locked users
[edit]@MarcoAurelio:: Why is there no official appeal procedure for users who have been globally locked? Isn't this an automatic assumption of guilt on the part of all Stewards no matter who the locked user is? Ottawahitech (talk) 20:50, 12 February 2021 (UTC)
- I am not sure what do you mean by official. The only way globally locked users can appeal their locks is though OTRS at stewardswikimediaorg because globally locked accounts, once locked, cannot log-in to their accounts anymore. We have asked for a different system 12 years ago but there has been no progress on that yet. —MarcoAurelio (talk) 10:50, 14 February 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks for your followup, @MarcoAurelio. It seems that this topic is much more complicated than I initially assumed.
- Let me explain where I am coming from: I am blocked from editing the English Wikipedia since 2017. Even though the system stops me from making any changes, I can still log-in and, for example, check and update my watchlist. I could change my Preferences or use my wiki-email if I wanted to, I think.
- It sounds like those who get Globally locked cannot do any of that. They are prevented from logging in on any Wikimedia Wikis, so it is much more restrictive than the block I am subjected to. From your description, Globally-locked users simply stop to exist as far as the Wikimedia foundation is concerned. All this because of the of a technical difficulty that has existed for over twelve years?
- Are my assumptions correct so far? Thanks in advance, Ottawahitech (talk) 21:49, 15 February 2021 (UTC)
- Yes, global locks do not let you log-in to the account. The account do not cease to exist though. It's still there. This is the only tool available to us when it comes to global account management, and has been since CentralAuth was installed on Wikimedia wikis ca. 2008 or 2009. —MarcoAurelio (talk) 21:54, 16 February 2021 (UTC)
