Talk:Promoting the South Asian languages projects
Add topicI think this is a great initiative. On the other hand, I want to limit some of the focus, to make sure that the money we expend is used in the best way possible. For instance, I think that we should consider to whom we are willing to pay. Anyone who helps, or needy people. Computer entrepreneurs or students? Personally, I favor the latter. So as not to spend too much money, I think we should, initially, put a cap of 1,000 articles of at least 500 words on each language. This will help us to avoid stubs, and make sure taht we have enough money to go around to other projects. Our goal is to jump-start Indian languages, not pay for an entire encyclopedia in them. Finally, and I am not sure of this, should we give precedence at this stage to larger languages, like Bengali, Marathi, Malayalam, over smaller languages? Our goal should be to reach as many people as possible. This, I believe, will help. Since Sanskrit is only spoken as a second language, I do not think that it falls within the limits of this project. Let us do what we can do and do that GOOD
[edit]Hoi,
Let us be realistic in what we can do. We can do our best to make the Mediawiki software be as good as possible. We can strive for effective UTF-8 and CLDR support within Mediawiki. We can try to get bugs fixed within Mediawiki, we can ask Mozilla to help with browser issues.
We can not give everybody a computer, or a new operating system. We have direct influence on Mediawiki and THAT is where we should concentrate when we want to enable new content. When we want to get more content, and when people in India use primarily English at the moment, we should stimulate more relevant information to the people of India in English is we have to.
One thing that can be done is to ease access to the English content is by localising or perfecting the localisation of the Mediawiki user interface in the Indian languages. When there are no problems using the user interface it becomes easy to use content and also to contribute content in an Indian language. GerardM 12:49, 20 January 2006 (UTC)

Promoting the South Asian languages projects
[edit]The info gathered here by now is not anymore confined to Indian languages, a South Asian/Desi label would be more accurate. So I propose to change the name of the page to Promoting the South Asian languages projects. Desiphral 17:45, 5 November 2006 (UTC)

- The idea of having it as "Promoting the South Asian languages projects" is a very good thing. For instance all native Sinhala speakers/writers residing in Sri Lanka and outside Sri Lanka can contribute. All non Sinhala Indic language speakers would benefit by adding Sinhala to this list. Thus promoting as "South Asian languages" instead of "Indian Languages" is very good and would benefit a huge audience. Ultimately Sinhala language is another Indic language, which has many similarities with other Indian languages. This would help native Sinhala speakers learn other Indic languages while contributing in Sinhala, and non Sinhala language speakers/writers learn Sinhala while contributing in their own native language. Going further
[edit]Hi,
More than a year later, some languages really got some content. Some are still at nearly the same stage. I would like to know what Telegu, Bengali and Bishnupriya Manipuri improve and others not.
For Gujarati, trying to recruit volunteers was not very successful. I would like to start a new approach and contact official institutions and see it helps. See Gujarati for the details. Yann 18:49, 24 January 2007 (UTC)
Good day, I see that talk page is inactive since 2007, but if anybody is interested in such please, please see Wikimedia Indigenous Languages. Amqui (talk) 20:50, 27 August 2012 (UTC)
