Massviews - & (%26 in URL)

Massviews Do not work with Links that include & (%26 in URL) Example: Category:Tiffany & Co. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Tiffany_%26_Co.) Error : No data found. Using Chrome on Windows 10 — The preceding unsigned comment was added by 185.41.77.6 (talk) 12:08, 13 October 2020 (UTC)

You are right but your example is confusing because your link omits the ending period in w:Category:Tiffany & Co. A different example without that issue: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Earth,_Wind_%26_Fire. A page name with '&' fails for Category but works for Wikilinks, e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B%26O which gives https://pageviews.toolforge.org/massviews/?platform=all-access&agent=user&source=wikilinks&range=latest-20&sort=views&direction=1&view=list&target=https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B%2526O. Constructing the expected url manually also fails for Category: https://pageviews.toolforge.org/massviews/?platform=all-access&agent=user&source=category&range=latest-20&subjectpage=0&subcategories=0&sort=views&direction=1&view=list&target=https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Earth,_Wind_%26_Fire. API Like Access for Numerical Data

Is is it possible to retrieve json data with a URL rather than using the javascript download in the browser? I am asking because I cannot seem to query page view redirects through the Wikimedia REST API, which Pageviews Analysis does provide. --Erulas (talk) 03:07, 17 December 2020 (UTC)

I second this request. Datumizer (talk) 07:44, 1 February 2021 (UTC)

Pageviews API - Not found

It seems that the tool does not get new data for some pages, see e. g. this search whose result is: Pageviews API - Not found. --Jan Kameníček (talk) 22:24, 4 January 2021 (UTC)

@Jan.Kamenicek No data was found for that date range, is the issue. It should instead show 0 pageviews. I'll look into fixing that. Anyway here's a working link: [1]. Best, MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 22:48, 5 January 2021 (UTC)
Ah, I see, thanks. --Jan Kameníček (talk) 22:51, 5 January 2021 (UTC)

Userviews analysis is broken

Resolved.

Hello, it seems like the Userviews analysis page is broken. Every time I try to search for an username, regardless of the parameters, I get the following error: "An unknown error occurred when querying Page Creation API". TheStriker (talk) 12:35, 5 January 2021 (UTC)

I got the same error message. Best, --Thomas Dresler (talk) 20:51, 5 January 2021 (UTC)
Also... Maybe MusikAnimal (WMF) can help? Euro know (talk) 22:31, 5 January 2021 (UTC)
@TheStriker, Thomas Dresler, and Euro know: Fixed. Sorry about that! MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 22:46, 5 January 2021 (UTC)

hourly pageviews dumps stopped at 2021-01-06 14:00

I'm looking at https://dumps.wikimedia.org/other/pageviews/2021/2021-01/ and the last file is "pageviews-20210106-140000.gz" i.e January 06, 14:00. For years it is updated hourly, and yesterday it suddenly stopped. Can anyone check it?

Sorry for the late reply. I believe the Analytics team fixed this. If not, you can reach out to the them via their mailing list. Pageviews Analysis is visualizer of data provided by the API. We can't help with any issue involving the dumps. Best, MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 02:10, 22 January 2021 (UTC)

Carl Robert Tielsch

Carl Robert Tielsch (my greatgrandfather, I was born 1954, the great generation gap is due to second marriages) was first married to Marie Töpffer,née Leupold ( this was his first, her second marriage). After her death, he got married to Elisabeth Köhlisch ( not Köhler as presently seen in the article on C.R. Tielsch). So Elisabeth Köhlisch became Elisabeth Tielsch,my greatgrandmaother- which is also my name. Elisabeth Tielsch, Tübingen

Please change the errors in the article to the following correct information:

Marie Töpffer, née Leupold Elisabeth, née Köhlisch — The preceding unsigned comment was added by Rivadavia54 (talk)

Request: stacked chart

I would like to request a stacked chart that shows the total page views for all pages listed. Example provided. Datumizer (talk) 07:57, 1 February 2021 (UTC)

Pageview Data for February 9th

Hello, it seems there are no pageviews data for February 9th available. Best, --Thomas Dresler (talk) 14:47, 10 February 2021 (UTC)

Same here. MikutoH (talk) 20:15, 10 February 2021 (UTC)

Same here.

Just passing through with my own issue but the documentation does state that it takes 24 hours or more for the API to update Slywriter (talk) 04:55, 11 February 2021 (UTC)
There was maintenance on the Pageviews API that caused a delay in the data being populated. It should be all caught up now. MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 17:28, 12 February 2021 (UTC)

Potential False Postives in yearly view of 2020

https://pageviews.toolforge.org/topviews/?project=en.wikipedia.org&platform=all-access&date=2020&excludes=

1. F5 networks and Media show abnormally low % for mobile views

2. On Android using Chrome and do not see the "report false positives" button mentioned in documentation. (Neither in mobile or desktop mode)

Can find me on en-wiki if need further information

Slywriter (talk) 04:54, 11 February 2021 (UTC)

@Slywriter: I don't know which documentation you refer to but I'm just a user of the tool. Pageviews Analysis#Topviews mentions false positives but not a "report false positives" button. Desktop views of "Media" [2] is clearly dominated by false positives in January and February 2020. "F5 Networks" is fairly evenly spread out in both desktop [3] and mobile [4]. If you go further back then it becomes clear that both desktop [5] and mobile [6] have been inflated since July 2018. Before that desktop [7] and mobile [8] had far lower numbers but desktop still looked hinky. PrimeHunter (talk) 19:07, 12 February 2021 (UTC)
@PrimeHunter: when in "Top Views", you get a slightly different faq if you click help [9] which discusses false positives, the key enwiki indicator (desktop exceeds mobile) and instructions to report them from the page. Top views shows F5 Networks at ~10% Mobile and Media at ~2%. Pageviews certainly seems to confirm a huge desktop spike at beginning of 2020 for Media which likely implies a scrape. F5 Networks is more complex as it consistently seems to have a 90 to 10 spread of Desktop to Mobile. Slywriter (talk) 04:06, 13 February 2021 (UTC)
@Slywriter: After clicking ✖ to remove F5 Networks as described, I see the "report false positive" link. The link disappears if I reload the page but it reappears if I restore and remove the article again. PrimeHunter (talk) 08:47, 13 February 2021 (UTC)

Interwiki map includes toolforge https://iw.toolforge.org/$1. This can sometimes be used to make working wikilinks via iw.toolforge.org redirects, e.g.:

toolforge:pageviews/?project=en.wikipedia.org&pages=Example.

I cannot get it to work with massviews. This url works:

https://iw.toolforge.org/pageviews/massviews/?source=wikilinks&target=https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Example

The wikilink version should be:

toolforge:pageviews/massviews/?source=wikilinks&target=https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Example

MediaWiki encodes $1 so the actual url becomes:

https://iw.toolforge.org/pageviews/massviews/%3Fsource%3Dwikilinks%26target%3Dhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Example

Toolforge redirects it to:

https://pageviews.toolforge.org/massviews/?source=wikilinks&target=https:/en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Example

That fails because https:// was changed to https:/ with one slash. I would like to link massviews in edit summaries where wikilinks are allowed including interwiki links, but raw url's or external link syntax do not produce links. Is there a workaround? I tried many things, e.g. more than two // with and without url encoding them as %2F. It all failed, e.g. this which still changes to one slash:

toolforge:pageviews/massviews/?source=wikilinks&target=https:////////en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Example

Is there a way to link massviews without target=(something with //)? I realize the problem is apparently a Toolforge bug/feature in the redirect and not a pageviews bug/feature, but pageviews could make a workaround like accepting a single slash, or if that's too ugly then accept target=en.wikipedia.org so this works:

toolforge:pageviews/massviews/?source=wikilinks&target=en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Example

Portuguese article content

Thats an mistake: "atravessa um meio isolante a uma velocidade superior à da luz neste meio, ", means velocity biggest than speed of light, big error in: https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Efeito_Tcherenkov — The preceding unsigned comment was added by 2804:431:e7c3:67e:8939:8604:7e9a:301f (talk) 13 February 2021, 07:37 (UTC)

You are only translating a part of it. I don't know Portuguese but according to Google Translate it says "passes through an insulating medium at a speed greater than that of light in this medium". This is correct. If you think nothing can be faster than light then it only applies to a vacuum. See w:Cherenkov radiation if you are better at English. Anyway, it doesn't belong here. If you have an issue with something in the Portuguese Wikipedia then post it there on the talk page or a help page. PrimeHunter (talk) 09:01, 13 February 2021 (UTC)

I arrange the list of the first 29 Wikipediae manually, so I am not sure if this list for January 2021 is correct. Probably some language versions are missing.

It would be convenient to have the list created automatically. --Perohanych (talk) 07:47, 15 February 2021 (UTC)

I'm sorry, this functionality isn't offered by the Pageviews suite of applications. You will need a developer to build this for you. The /metrics/pageviews/aggregate I think is the relevant API endpoint for this data (total pageviews across all pages of a project). Best, MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 20:49, 22 February 2021 (UTC)

shaking image

Dear Wikipedia, Under the website 'Greenvile_Collins' at 'pageview' and then 'pageview analysis', the broadcast image shakes continuously and badly. Joseph Dessiou 2A00:23C5:258A:2A00:35E1:C0C6:FB51:8A60 10:02, 15 February 2021 (UTC)

Yo, same. Shakes at a really high frequency, it's really hard on the eyes. It stops shaking if I add another page to the graph. Firefox and Chrome are concerned, Ubuntu 21.04 and Windows 10. 185.194.234.170 14:55, 4 April 2022 (UTC)

Add dark theme

I can implement it Vitaly Zdanevich (talk) 15:46, 10 March 2021 (UTC)

@Vitaly Zdanevich Hello again! :) Patches are most welcome. See the source code at https://github.com/MusikAnimal/pageviews. This app is a little easier to set up locally than XTools, if you wanted to try, but if not we can do the same we did with XTools where you just add the CSS. I suppose the best placement is in the _shared.scss file. We can do the same trick with the invert filter for the <canvas> elements. Thanks for contributing! MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 19:42, 19 March 2021 (UTC)
ok, thank you, I will finish XTools first according to all feedback, and after that I can use the same color values Vitaly Zdanevich (talk) 18:09, 20 March 2021 (UTC)

Topview rankings

Hi,

I'd like to get a list of the top ~10k most viewed wikipedia pages of all time (or at least in a single year like 2020), but I don't need the number of page views and also exact ordering isn't too important. Is this currently possible to do without clicking the "show more" button 100x manually over the course of a couple hours?

Thanks, Norman — The preceding unsigned comment was added by Thenorm23 (talk)

@Thenorm23: The underlying API used by Topviews only provides the top 1,000 most viewed pages. Sorry :( You can download the full list from Topviews as CSV or JSON using the "Download" dropdown on the right side above the list of pages. Hope this helps, MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 19:47, 19 March 2021 (UTC)

Top pageviews per country

FYI new API endpoint for the top-1000 viewed pages per country (wikitech, phab). Would be great to see this surfaced on the pageviews tool! --Isaac (WMF) (talk) 13:38, 25 March 2021 (UTC)
