Moving averages aka smoothing

A feature request: It would be cool if the tool had an option to smooth the graph, with something like moving averages. Google Ngram Viewer has such an option, where it says "with smoothing of" and "3", where 3 is the default but can be changed. Without the option, we see the weekly up-and-down zig-zag which is more of a noise than signal. --Dan Polansky (talk) 10:11, 4 October 2016 (UTC)

@Dan Polansky: In the "Settings" under "Chart preferences", try the "Use Bézier curve on line charts" option. Not sure if this does what you're after, but it does smooth the lines of the chart, so to speak MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 17:12, 4 October 2016 (UTC)

@MusikAnimal (WMF): Thank you. I tried the setting you mention but it does not help. I am viewing a year's data and I still see all the weekly up-and-down zig-zags. For reference, I am trying this Wikibooks report. In April 2016, the high data points are about 5 500 while the low data points are about 3 300. With good smoothing, the contrast between the mentioned high and low data points would disappear, and I would not even notice anything going on on a weekly basis. --Dan Polansky (talk) 20:04, 5 October 2016 (UTC)

Changing numbers on sw.wikipedia.org?

I noticed that recorded view numbers have varied later on sw.wikipedia.org. In September I was surprised to see that the article sw.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetemeko_la_ardhi had thousands of views which is a lot on that wiki.

When I look it up now Pageviews Analysis indicates only 535 views for all of September, Topviews Analysis shows 527.

For another surprisingly highly viewed entry sw.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kupatwa_kwa_jua Pageviews Analysis shows today 9.982 views for September, but Topviews only shows 759. AND the interesting thing is when I click on that figure in Topviews I get a new tab in Pageviews which also shows 759! So now I have 2 tabs side by side, showing Pageviews Analysis for the same entry "kupatwa kwa jua" with different numbers.

And I tried Tetemeko la ardhi once more, now I get Totals: 6.445 (215/day) for September, but if use the other access via topviews it is only 527 for the whole month. Tested just for fun on de.wikipedia for entry "Erdbeben". Similar discrepancy. https://tools.wmflabs.org/pageviews/?project=de.wikipedia.org&platform=all-access&agent=user&start=2016-09-01&end=2016-09-30&pages=Erdbeben shows 15,340 views in September, access the other way via https://tools.wmflabs.org/pageviews/?project=de.wikipedia.org&platform=desktop&agent=user&start=2016-09-01&end=2016-09-30&pages=Erdbeben round shows Totals: 8.865 (296/day). @Kipala: I believe the discrepancy in your case is because you have different platforms selected. In the first link for Erdbeben, "All" platforms are selected, showing at total of 15,340 views. In the second link only Desktop is shown and hence the views are much lower. The same options are available in Topviews, so try changing it to "All" platforms and compare the views. @Gryllida: The page was recently moved, so the data has not been populated in the API yet. It usually takes around 24 hours. At some point we hope to show data for previous locations of the page, but this is not easy to do. You can follow phab:T141332 for updates. Sorry! Is the raw data available?

I'm a computer science professor at the University of Pennsylvania. Several of my students would like to do a senior design project using the wikipedia page view statistics. Can you tell me whether the raw data that you used for the Pageview Analysis tool is available? I see that the data up to 2016 is available from stats.grok.se. Is there a similar source of data for after Jan 2016?

Since May 2015, we have been using a new pageview definition. The raw dumps for this can be found at dumps.wikimedia.org/other/pageviews. See also the documentation on how to parse it. Show all redirects by default

I am getting completely lost with all this. I personally could forgo all the extra stuff in Pageviews Analysis 2.0 BETA. It is obvious to me that an article by default should include all redirects in the same displayed bar. To capture all views of an article page people would expect redirects to be included by default as they get you to the same page anyway. It gives you a proper count of views to that page. How you got there is a secondary issue. Sure you could have a checkbox that you could use to deselect including redirects but I think most people would expect redirects included by default. --Penbat (talk) 21:24, 27 October 2016 (UTC)

@Penbat: Thanks for the feedback! Unfortunately, given the way the pageviews API works, it is not feasible to include all redirects by default. In fact, this sometimes is not desirable, such as when individual redirects are being discussed. There is however a separate tool for this functionality that exists right now at toollabs:redirectviews. To get there, click "Redirects" from the chart legend. The BETA version is more about introducing editing statistics, redoing the layout entirely to make it easier to do article comparisons, and put focus on the visualization itself. Hope this helps! Well, this is only partially true. For some pages where there are but a few redirects, it's definitely feasible to include them by default. For others where there are hundreds, and you are comparing say, 10 pages and all of their redirects, it's going to have a very noticeable effect on performance. There is some special logic I could include to conditionally include redirects, but that really complicates the code and the user experience. There is talk to address the issue in the API directly, which is the correct way to do it. BETA version: Checkboxes don't work

BETA version: Dates at the bottom are off

OK, first here is the old version of PV for an article first created Oct 19 and has had 210 views total as of 10/27. Dates are shown correctly.

Page name look-up working erratically for redirects

I tried to get page view statistics for Direct3D 9.1, Direct3D 9.2, and Direct3D 9.3, all of which are redirects to Direct3D#Feature levels, but the former is not looked up correctly. If I type the full name in the Pages field, the only suggestion shown in the drop-down list is Direct3D, and when I enable "Autocompletion including redirects", the name is found but then it gives me an "Error querying Pageviews API - Not found". The latter two work like a charm though.

Similar problem affects Direct3D 9, Direct3D 9.0, DirectX 9.1, DirectX 9.2, DirectX 9.3, DirectX 10, DirectX 11, DirectX 12, Direct3D 10, Direct3D 10.0 Direct3D 10.1, Direct3D 11, Direct3D 11.1, Direct3D 11.2, and Direct3D 11.3. I'm using Chrome 54, Firefox 49 and Microsoft Edge in Windows 10 version 1507 (10.0.14393.351).

BTW supplying the URL parameter pages does not work in Microsoft Edge - which breaks the hyperlink from Wikipedia Page information: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Direct3D_9.1&action=info --DmitryKo (talk) 00:47, 30 October 2016 (UTC)

@DmitryKo: Hey! Just as you've found you do need to adjust the search method to find redirects via the search. For new pages, you might see "Pageviews API - not found" as the data has not been populated to the Pageviews API yet. However I see Direct3D 9.1 was created in November 2012, so my guess is – believe it or not – there have been no pageviews to this redirect since the API was introduced in July 2015. I bet if you check back tomorrow, the pageviews from us both will show up. I see that all of the pages you mentioned are redirects. Have you tried Redirect Views? Beta not working at all

Yes, it's fixed. Thank you! Now that I'm looking at the Beta version, I notice that although some new features have been added like Topviews and Massviews, it appears that the option for "Latest 10 20 30 60 90 days" is gone and that it is defaulted to the last 20 days.... there just wasn't enough perceived demand to change the range except through the calendar option? @Akhooha: This is very helpful feedback! First off, Topviews, Massviews, etc have always been there, but the links to them were at the bottom of the page. People did not notice them (you being one of them, I take it), so I've moved them to the top to make it more apparent. Glad to hear that's working! :)

Next, the "Latest 10 20..." links were there only for familiarity of those who used the old stats.grok.se. That evidently led people to believe it was the only way to change the range, so I wanted to do away with that in favour of the date picker. The date picker includes more useful options like "last month", "this year", etc. If demand is high enough I can restore some of the "latest" links.

Finally, I take it your screen is "medium" sized, and you don't see the Summary column on the right? In addition to the daily average, it shows lots of info, such as the number of edits and editors, page watchers, etc. I am working on a way to expose this information to users with smaller screens. Beta: Number of watchers not always reported

I tested the new Pageview analysis page with the following queries added one at a time (see screen capture image). For the first three queries, there was no 'number of watchers' reported. When I added the query 'Parkinson's disease' (specifically to test the number of watchers function), to my surprise the number of watchers were reported for all four pages. BETA version: keep the "latest 10 20 ... days" links

It's not working

Can confirm that doesn't work completely for me either. Example here, but every page gives the same problem: it stops giving information after October 16 (only gives zeroes). Could replicate in Chrome 53 and Firefox 49 on Windows 8. A user reported that it worked for him. This is the first time I access the tool, so it might not be a cache issue. Topviews for WikiProjects

@Saqib: Actually, there is a way to do this, assuming the WikiProject is not enormous in size (10,000 pages or less). You can use the Massviews tool and provide a category for the WikiProject, such as Category:WikiProject Google articles. Pages in this category are actually the talk pages of the articles, so you will have to select the "Use subject page instead of talk page" option. So here's all the pages in WikiProject Google, sorted by number of pageviews: [4]. For larger WikiProjects, such as WikiProject Medicine, you can get the most-viewed pages for a certain class of article. New possible tool to do

Hi, guys! Your Pageviews Analysis project is extraordinary cool! I'd like to ask you to add a new tool in the project - a tool named like "Comparison of pageviews across Wikipedians". What if an author could watch the number of views per day of all the pages he created? That'd be cool, wouldn't it? Of course, the idea could be not appropriate for the project. Couldn't you, in such a case, write the appropriate code sequence for interested Wikipedians like me, if it wouldn't be too much trouble for you. @Egor Shustoff: You can also use the Massviews tool to show pageviews of all linked pages on a given page. So for instance, I have my list of articles at User:MusikAnimal/Articles/Created. New feature for Pageviews

Is it possible to display where views are coming from? There are sometimes spikes in pageviews that I would like to understand. That is, if someone views a page from a link in another Wikipedia article or a link elsewhere on the internet, can that information be captured and displayed? Feedback on BETA version

Suggest that perhaps for a single title, in the bar chart the values could be displayed on the chart, similar to stats.grok.se

Don't know how easy this is, but at times I don't want to go through the process of downloading a file or moving the cursor over each data point.

Not a bad idea! However unlike stats.grok.se, Pageviews Analysis allows you to view data over very wide ranges, such that showing the values over each bar simply won't be possible. I could add some logic to only show the values if they would fit, etc, but this all depends on if the Chart.js library supports it. I'll look into it! Latest 30 days

@Menner: I want to do this, but the issue is 20 days offers a good perspective, and moreover the ideal illustration of how data is charted. 30 days is just so much that the data becomes more squeezed together, sacrificing the appeal of the chart for demonstration purposes. If you want to link to the past 30 days on your wiki, this easy to do. Just use range=latest-30 in the link, and omit and start and end parameters. More info at toollabs:pageviews/url_structure. The pageviews endpoint only offers a daily granularity, but we could implement a monthly view on the clientside. I've created a task at phab:T151373. Date ranges in Redirect Views

For some reason, I cannot get the dates in Redirect Views to behave properly. (I am using Mobile Safari on an iPad, iOS 10.) Clicking on "all time" successfully shows the range 7/172015–11/24/2016 (and thank you for that button!). But I've been trying to set the start date to 2/11/2016 and get the views from then up to the present. But when I edit the start date to what I want, the end date has mysteriously reset itself to 5/11/2016. It will NOT go beyond this date. I would assume a three-month limit on the tool, but that can't be right because "all time" works.

I should clarify that I edit dates directly in the text box; I've had little luck using the calendar widget.

@Gorthian: Sorry about that! The date limits are remnants before the improved analytics cluster was deployed (basically back when performance was still an issue). The "all time" button worked because of some unrelated bug in the date range picker. Anyhoo, I've just removed all date range limitations from all the apps, so you should now be able to enter any arbitrary range :) However I should offer a disclaimer: While the API can now handle any date range, the app which runs on your browser may slow down or perhaps even freeze if you choose a wide range for a large number of articles. This is unlikely to happen with Redirect Views, as you probably don't get more than 200 or so articles. I suspect browser performance would only be an issue if you query for thousands, perhaps tens of thousands, of pages. Best MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 19:12, 26 November 2016 (UTC)

Sum of editors counts same editors multiple times

I notice that the sum of editors takes the sum from each page and then adds those together. So if the same editor edits nine pages he or she will get counted in the final summary as nine editors instead of as a single editor. Vibrating page

Whenever I click the link for this from a page's Revision history, the image on the screen "vibrates" as if caught in some infinite loop. May only be an issue with Google Chrome; Internet Explorer seems to still work fine. Chrome also works fine if I use this directly, rather than via the link in revision history. @Wbm1058: I still haven't been able to figure this out. If you could try this... go to the Pageviews tool via the link in Revision history, just as you did. Confirm everything is vibrating. Now try resizing your browser. Does the vibration go away? I actually recently got a new computer with a bigger screen, so maybe I can reproduce this. Hey right, that's it. The problem is only when my browser is maximized. When I "restore down" the vibrating stops. When I maximize from the restored down screen it comes back to vibrate again. My screen is 1920×1200 which is higher-res than HDTV. I watch TV on my computer with Windows Media Center. Which is why my desktop is still Windows 7. Wbm1058 (talk) 21:40, 2 December 2016 (UTC)

Outreach Wiki support for Topviews

Hey, so I went to do an evaluation of why there is so much of a spike in Outreach's pageviews recently, and I noticed that I can't used Topviews for Outreach and Meta, and presumambly other projects. Knowing which pages on coordination wikis have the most views in any given window of time, would be super useful for a number of situations. @Astinson (WMF): Try again tomorrow. The topviews data for the previous month usually gets populated on the 2nd or 3rd of the month. You don't see anything for October because data older than November 2016 is apparently not available for Outreach and other "non-knowledge" wikis, which were recently added to the Pageviews API. @Astinson (WMF): Using the "Date type" dropdown, you can switch between monthly and daily. The latter is continually updated during the month, but you can only view one day at a time. pageviews feature request: number of days with >0 views

Would it be possible for the tool to report the number of days in the period displayed where a given page received >0 page views. This is often a useful thing to consider when determining whether redirects are useful or not. Ideal would be to expand the note at the bottom of the page from e.g. "71 pageviews" to "71 pageviews on 51 of 335 days (15%)". Thanks. John Glenn not showing a count

@Light show: There is some weird caching logic with the API (not the Pageviews application) that I don't really understand. Sometimes users see the data for today/yesterday while others do not. Here I am able to see it. It will eventually show up for you too, though, promise :) Check back later today, and certainly by tomorrow it should be there. The number by the way is 508,855 pageviews for 8 December – so roughly 50 times the normal traffic that page receives! MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 18:51, 9 December 2016 (UTC)

@WikedKentaur: It is most likely a bot that has spoofed its user agent to seem like a normal user. This sort of thing happens time to time, and unfortunately there's not much we can do about it. One way to identify false positives is to check mobile versus desktop. Mobile should be just as high if not higher than desktop. Here we see that Michael Jackson only shows up in Topviews for desktop, but does not show up for mobile web. Hope this helps! MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 18:58, 9 December 2016 (UTC)

Pipes in links

The pipe in the url is problematic in substituting templates. It wipes out all text after the pipe. See this revision for what I mean. Is it possible to use something else? Mark Schierbecker (talk) 13:29, 14 December 2016 (UTC)

@Mark Schierbecker: The pipe character is valid syntax in MediaWiki templates, so I think you need to use the {{!}} magic word. So instead of Todd_Graves|Todd_Graves_(entrepreneur) try Todd_Graves{{!}}Todd_Graves_(entrepreneur). Pageviews Analysis uses the pipe because that's the same system the MediaWiki API uses to separate a list of pages in a URL, since the pipe character | cannot be used in page titles [11].

If this is a common scenario (pasting in pageviews comparisons in to Template:Requested move), you might consider altering that template so that it automatically shows a link to Pageviews Analysis comparing the two articles. Date limits not working for Pages, Edits, etc. under Statistics

Is there a problem with the Siteviews Analysis tool? When looking at data from the past, numbers change every time I refresh the page. Specifically, the Pages and Edits figures under Statistics. Everything under Statistics seems to be reporting current data, not date-limited data.

Example for August, 2016

Statistics Pages: 41,035,700 Articles: 5,312,970 Edits: 865,232,851 Images: 849,875 Users: 29,806,303 Active users: 127,176 Admins: 1,273
