Some reflections on the wiki gender gap issues

I was tempted not to intervene, some will think it is not elegant, some will think this letter was made on request, but this is the last thing that matters. Projects like WikiDonne, Les sans pagEs, Wiki Women in red, Wikimujeres, Wikiesfera, FemNetz etc (some of them supported by their communities and affiliates, some of them not), have every right, sense and dignity in the world to exist as Wikimedia projects, like those about astronomy, butterflies or football players, because notable women and non-binary people ARE part of knowledge, as are those of men - like any other project that deals with underrepresented groups based on gender, ethnicity, different abilities, generational diversity etc, without being considered useless or harmful, or non-neutral. And no, skin color does not have the same value as the color of hairs, and if we have WikiDonne, we do not necessarily have to have WikiUomini, because these projects were not created to counter something that is already dominant in our content. Having projects dedicated to the gender gap means strengthening something where we are lacking, and we tell ourselves so and the world out there tells us so. Anyone who works on these projects, humanely and according to the principles of the movement and the UCoC are welcome, without running the risk of being targeted as a POV pusher or activist to be removed or targeted or chased. Especially when they are aligned with the movement, active in content creation, are also affiliates and non-profit associations/legal entities. Otherwise all this work would be wasted. Filling a knowledge gap is not a point of view: rather "neutrality" is. i.e. Feminist Defenses of Value-Laden Inquiry I am dubious of appeals to unreasonable people, The techno-utopians have not read it:Il nome della rosa or en:Babel Tower. Culture change is hard, but we might as well keep trying. As Jennifer Riggs said in 2009, "decline will continue based on organizational culture, until an investment is made to shift the culture." @Slowking4 I think it is even more complex...shifting culture without diversifing participation and modalities of participation would only be patching existing status quo (including power relations) -- Zblace (talk) 18:16, 16 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
