Talk:New Readers/Raising Awareness in India
Add topicComment about promotion
[edit]TV advertisements and government partnerships are also recommended as ways to introduce and promote Wikipedia to Indians.
It really is great idea to promote Wikipedia through TV ads (an ad-free service promoted through ads, it's an ironical world). A lot of people would come to know of it when the correct television channel is chosen for advertisements. There is a small issue of promoting Wikipedia's motive correctly through ads. It would possibly be the first time a lot of people would be hearing of Wikipedia. Care should be taken to promote it's motives correctly possibly considering the psychology of first impression. Hope Wikipedia gets recognized! - - Kaartic correct me, if i'm wrong 12:53, 12 June 2017 (UTC)
Increasing Brand awareness
[edit]I guess using the phrase "Wikipedia - the free encyclopedia" rather than just "Wikipedia" in more places like mobile web, mobile app etc. where the you could generally find more new readers would help in reducing the confusion. When people see the phrase "the free encyclopedia in more places they would possibly not mistake it for a search engine or a social media platform.
P.S.: I think I now see why the Wikipedia android app introduced a new onboarding page titled "The free encyclopedia" recently. It's a good first move but possibly not enough. - - Kaartic correct me, if i'm wrong 13:58, 21 January 2018 (UTC)
Files for lyrics and composition
[edit]@ZMcCune (WMF): Can you share the music file?
Is this an original composition? If so, can you post the lyrics and score in addition to the music file? Thanks. Blue Rasberry (talk) 14:39, 4 April 2018 (UTC)
@Bluerasberry: The music for the video IS an original composition that was made for the project. But it was not produced as a stand-alone file, so it will take us some time to get it separated from the video and ready to share. As for lyrics, I can request those too. ZMcCune (WMF) (talk) 22:50, 4 April 2018 (UTC)
- @ZMcCune (WMF): Someone must have made a stand alone file, right? Did you negotiate to secure the separate copyrights for the lyrics, composition, performance, and recording? Blue Rasberry (talk) 11:17, 5 April 2018 (UTC)
- @Bluerasberry: Indeed, the production team has likely made a stand alone audio file. It is this file we have requested, so we can share it on Commons and with you. Because the final deliverable of this production contract was a video, that is currently the only media file we have. In past projects (e.g. https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Communications/2017_project_to_promote_Wikipedia_in_Iraq) we simply isolated the audio track of the final video for the creation of the stand alone audio file. This time, I am hoping the agency will give us a high fidelity audio file, even though it is an additional deliverable to the contracted set. 🤞 ZMcCune (WMF) (talk) 16:55, 5 April 2018 (UTC)
- @ZMcCune (WMF): I do want the files for this video but I will work with whatever the situation is.
- If I were to propose that it become a rule at the WMF that no one is allowed to commission art without acquiring both an independent file of it and the copyright, then would you endorse it?
- I do not know this particular situation but it does seem odd that you commissioned original lyrics, an original composition, an original performance, and an original recording, and negotiated the copyright for each of these things, but then failed to request these things as deliverables. The way things usually work in India is that everyone assumes that copyright does not exist and I have some fear that if you contracted a local media agency then they totally disregarded a need to acquire copyright from any of the artists.
- I could be off base about any of this and I am jumping to conclusions just by you saying that the original music was not a deliverable, but also, I have seen these circumstances before and have seen strange outcomes. I want you to be successful in everything you do but this is a free culture community. I do not want to impose a bureaucracy and I hope you agree that asking to confirm free licenses on the content is not too much to expect. Thanks. Blue Rasberry (talk) 12:42, 12 April 2018 (UTC)
- @Bluerasberry: Hi Lane! the policy you describe is the policy that we follow. When the Foundation commissions media production, we own the rights to all original material produced and take delivery of those files at project end. I have worked on projects of this kind in Iraq, Nigeria, Turkey, and India now and can attest to your concern about folks not readily understanding the freely-licensed creative practice, but have worked extensively to communicate and act on it. It's part of my job and something I take immensely seriously. In fact, it's part of my job in which I get to ADVOCATE for this type of creative practice and in that, I am particularly excited because agencies have been extremely generous, often producing material (such as this original song) that were not originally requested... all to improve the creative quality of the video and to "enrich the Commons" as members of this production agency said.
- The delay here as been on me because we are currently working to promote the video to the new audiences it is intended for and I simply had not had time to collect and upload the files you requested. I'd appreciate your trust and good faith here.
- In regards to the audio files, I am pleased to report they are now on Commons. You can make use of them here - https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ektara_Hindi_Wikipedia_ad_vocal_track.wav + https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ektara_Hindi_Wikipedia_ad_background_music.wav
