Create and consume knowledge

One Potential UX Approach

[edit]

There is a UX/UI Designer on YouTube known as Juxtopposed who has been developing public interest in the course of publishing redesign proposals of well known public platforms/websites, and they recently featured a prospective overhaul of Wikipedia that may offer some insights into how to improve the site for public utility (though it may be best to leave aside the fundraising ideas). I don't agree with all of the proposed changes, but it offers good insights in how to further ease public accessibility of the desktop platform with present technology and standards. Strengthen metrics and reporting

[edit]

The overview that links to this page speaks about "strengthen metrics and reporting" but this post doesn't speak about metrics. Most successful webprojects increase user engagement by running A/B tests to improve their metrics. Running A/B tests to improve the count of editors with 5/100 edits per month would be one of the best things to bring Wikimedia forward. ChristianKl10:59, 2 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

I assume you are referring to the "infrastructure" goal in the 2023-2024 WMF annual plan (which was written several years later than this recommendation). I don't know if "strengthen metrics and reporting" is supposed to be part of "improve user experience", or a separate sub-goal, but FWIW the plan does talk about improving A/B test tooling (in the SDS2 objective). Of course the WMF and WMDE have been running A/B tests for a long time (I think the first ones were around 2012 as part of the introduction of VisualEditor work?).
The movement strategy recommendation doesn't talk about A/B tests because, well, it's a high-level strategy document. Tgr (talk) 20:35, 15 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Results from Strategy Lunch at Wikimania 2024

[edit]

A lunchtime session was held at Wikimania with about 50 attendees, to discuss how individual Wikimedians see selected strategic initiatives. They were asked "What is happening now to support this strategic initiative? What do you want to do that will support this strategic initiative?"

One discussed strategic initiative was: Peer communication and collaboration spaces

The participants (one table) identified the following

Happening now

  • More and more co-ordination is happening off-wiki (examples: Eventbrite, conferences, social media, Telegram, IRC)
    • Some such platforms are problematic: closed-source, proprietary, privacy-violating, out of date
  • Some hubs (GLAM hub was the example) have monthly calls
  • Regional hubs are being used for mutual learning and publicity of events

What can we do

  • Consider greater use of Matrix, Discord, look at Mastodon
  • IRC v3 is coming, which should be able to bridge between IRC and Matrix/Telegram
  • FOSS-based platforms can be used
  • Increase use of platforms that allow bridging, look for platforms that will allow bridging between that platform and the SUL wiki login
  • There are opportunities when considering tools for peer communication.

Another discussed strategic initiative was: Newcomer resources

The participants (4 tables) identified the following:

Happening now

  • Growth team/Newcomer resources on MediaWiki
    • Onboarding new Wikipedians
  • Ikusgela (Basque Wiki)
  • Wiki Minute videos
  • Supporting newcomer-focused campaigns
  • The "Wiki Loves..." events
  • Reading interface improvements
  • Commons Upload Wizard improvements
  • Incubator conversations and efforts to improve language onboarding

What we can do

  • Make links to other projects more visible on the new Vector skin
    • Maybe put it in the sticky header -- helps newcomers discover them
  • Reform of policies on big Wikipedias
  • Safeguarding and protections for anonymity
  • Work on general infrastructure (example - internet access)
  • Clarify roles
    • Who is doing the bulk of training and outreach
    • Who meets people and tells them what Wikimedia is
    • Training as a newcomer resource
