Date and Torch

[edit]
  • Not bothering with this one, sorry - it is the day that the Olympic torch do-dah hits Manchester & the place + public transport will be packed. - Sitush (talk) 14:31, 31 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
    • That's a good point. Perhaps we should rearrange to the Sunday or a different weekend? Bazonka (talk) 19:19, 31 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
    • Well spotted, Si. You're right that travelling would be a non-starter with the flame passing through. Assuming we can't get the route changed to avoid conflict with our meetup, how does Sunday 24 June sound to folks? I seem to recall someone suggested we ought to try a Sunday, so this might be opportune. --RexxS (talk) 19:38, 31 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
      • I'd probably have to leave rather early if it was on the 24th, since I'm attending Jodrell Bank Live that evening. So I would prefer the 23rd. How problematic would it be to hold a wikimeet on the same day as the Olympic Torch passes through the city? Is there the potential for linking up with that event, e.g. in terms of attending and photographing (for Commons) the torch as it passes through the city?
      • Also, note that User:Sj will be around Manchester this weekend and might be able to attend this meetup. So moving to another weekend wouldn't really work... Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 22:37, 31 May 2012 (UTC)Reply
      • I was in Liverpool yesterday when the torch came through. Fairly busy for half-an-hour or so waiting for it go go past, then it was back to normal. The torch won't arrive in Manchester till about 5pm anyway, so I don't think it'll be much of a problem. Bazonka (talk) 18:07, 2 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

The Torch will distract me even less than the Jubilee, but I'll try to get some details on the likely scale of disruption. Several million turned out for the mangnificent Manchester City's MASSIVE, triumphant open-top bus tour, but everywhere seemed to cope. We set up a command centre in the Ralph, and all went smoothly. Anyway, there's no panic. If and when consensus is reached, I'll have a word with George. He was perfectly happy. Hengistmate (talk) 16:12, 7 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

There has been a Jubilee? - Sitush (talk) 15:55, 14 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

I think we have a consensus that the Abercromby is the place to be. Bazonka (talk) 12:07, 18 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

OK, I'll make the call. Stand by. Hengistmate (talk) 11:00, 19 June 2012 (UTC)Reply

Sadly neither can I—I've spent too many weekends travelling recently, and much as I'd love to come for a beer in Manchester, I need a weekend off. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 12:36, 23 June 2012 (UTC)Reply
