Agreed the wording is a little unfortunate. I think the original edit 'warned' that some of the attendees will be speaking in Welsh as the event has been arranged with the aim of creating and improving articles on the Welsh language Wikipedia, with a focus on ones about Cardiff. But anyone is welcome to turn up, and edit any of the Wikimedia projects in whatever language(s). If you can contibute to the Welsh Wikipedia in any way (e.g. by uploading images to Commons from a wishlist made on the day or helping to make pretty infoboxes and navboxes), then better still. I've just noticed it says 'Wicimedia' - but this is a primarily a Wikimedia event right? I double-took for a minute when I looked back. I'll change it and tweak the intro a little (there is something genuinely off putting about it in general). I'm touchy right now about the huge increase in Welsh language promotion, and the current wave of Identity Building in general (for elusive European money, seen latest in the proposed colour-change from blue to red of Cardiff City's shirts) - Wales is poor and I see that every day: the people want and need to see and use what money there is. That promoting Welsh has any value at all in terms of increasing our wealth is debatable to say the least, and most of us feel we are wasting money that we just don't have to spend right now. Things have recently jumped from merely promoting Welsh - to nationalist-led calls for bilingualism - to actually placing Welsh-first in a number of areas - and there in no democratic mandate for it at all from the people. It's a costly promotional phase by a group of deal-making 'rainbow' Assembly members, and Wikipedia needs to be extremely careful that it is never exploited in these kinds of political matters itself. Thanks for your input and for your views on the Welsh language, the coalition of the previous Welsh Assembly Governmet and the proposed colour of Cardiff City home shirt for the next football season. You'll be pleased to hear that no amount of your/my tax goes towards the Welsh Wikipedia - its contibutors are volunteers, just like on every other Wikimedia project. Hang on, what is this event actually about? Can someone please tell me? Is it about the English language Wikipedia, the Welsh language Wikipedia (a different thing with different content - it's not just ported English stuff), or both - and would I question whether that can work at one event? If it's English or both, then why on earth is the English poster headlined in Welsh, and all about "Welsh language editing"? It makes it look like it's a bilingual Welsh Wicipedia only event, and would simply contravene Wikipedia's rules for the English language Wikipedia if it was at all about that (as well as being highly politically contraversial - esp in Cardiff). If it's all about 'Welsh Wicipedia' (which it's starting to really look like to me), then why is it being advertised at all on the English Wikipedia Watchlist?! I don't get it, but I've got every right to both ask this question and be concerned.

If it's Welsh Wicipedia only - make it a LOT more clear. And do they English Wikipedia Watchlist people know this? I would suggest that they don't. Matt Lewis (talk) 20:21, 11 June 2012 (UTC)

What's the event actually about?

I had the idea, as an editor of the Welsh language Wicipedia, to try an arrange an editathon to coincide with the Tafwyl festival in Cardiff, the idea being to focus on articles about Cardiff and also (again, by tagging on to Tafwyl) aim to try and draw new contibutors to the Welsh language Wicipedia (and possible any Wikimedia project in general). The Welsh language Wicipedia has always benefitied from contibutions by non-Welsh speakers, in things like uploading of images, help with populating categories, adding interwiki links etc, and that is why I noted as a footnote that non-Welsh speakers are more than welcome.

Make it a LOT more clear

It does seem that something may have been lost in translation. When I first posted about the event on cy:wiki, it was for an editathon of the Welsh language Wicipedia, then User:Victuallers (in attempt to be helpful with promotion), posted about it on the en:wiki, but refered to it there as a .. "Welsh language Wiki meet", and went on the describe what will take place as: "The theme will be Cardiff itself, topping up existing Welsh language articles on buildings, societies, history and people of Cardiff, as well as creating new articles." User:Victuallers has then gone on to add the event here on meta (something I was also intending to do), and went on to describe it as: "A social gathering for Welsh language Wicipedwyr ['Wikipedians' --Rhyswynne (talk) 09:04, 12 June 2012 (UTC)]. He also added (which I agree with) "Non welsh speakers are also welcome to help work on the Welsh Language Wicipedia".

So there you have it, one small room, has been booked for one day, to try and improve one small wiki. Sorry if there has been any misunderstanding. If you think that the first two users who have noted that they will attend need to be made aware of this clarification, I'll get in touch with them.

As for this event contrevening Wikipedia's rules, being political and contrversial, I'm going to have to refrain from commenting in case I forget the Wikpedia guidance about being nice.--Rhyswynne (talk) 09:04, 12 June 2012 (UTC)

"Lost in translation" is an understatement, and 'being nice' (rather than misguided then puzzled?) has nothing to do with it - if you followed the English Watchlist link path (as any number of people will have done) it simply looked like an English meetup and a possible rule infraction. Who knows what your preparation has been about? There was no reference to it. It's much clearer now it's been changed though, and obviously I've withdrawn my name.
