Changed title

[edit]

I've changed title, but I don't know if this is the most suitable one to make the page easy to find: there are always many requests on this topic although information has always been quite easy to find and there are easy solutions, so I think the problem is that people don't expect this problem at all and when they bump into it they don't understand it so they don't know how to look for solutions either. Merge

[edit]

I did not find this page, so I created a new one: How to create an account for a new user

Now, I see there is much in common between them. I think each has information and other advantages that the other one lacks. They should probably be merged, but I lack the energy at the moment...so I'm just noting it here :) -Pete F (talk) 00:24, 30 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Pete F. Although I appreciate the effort of Nemo bis's edits and the merge, the combined pages are now left with gaps that were covered on the How to create an account for a new user page.
One thing I did learn in this process is that Special:CreateAccount is the superior page for Accountcreaters as it has three extra checkboxes (for mail password, override anti-spoof, and override blacklist) - but these last two checkboxes are only there if you enter from Wikipedia:
en:Special:UserLogin (and scrolling down to the create account button) - no checkboxes
en:Special:CreateAccount - 3 checkboxes
Special:CreateAccount - 1 checkbox
Special:UserLogin (and scrolling down to the create account button) - no checkboxes
Special:CreateAccount is an alias for a different landing page, but the landing page name looks similar to the Special:UserLogin landing page.
Having the checkbox to email the user a temporary password is good, as I assume it would mandate that they pick their own password upon first login with the temporary password. That would avoid having to trust people to change their password.
I do not have the energy or focus at this to go back through the diffs and integrate Pete's edits with Nemo bis's edits. I do not see much merging on the new merged page. Cheers! Checkingfax (talk) 21:52, 30 April 2016 (UTC)Reply
Thankfully, Nemo_bis made some very helpful edits (with good comments in the edit summaries) to my version before redirecting. I'm learning a few things myself, and will try to improve the final version once I've fully understood all the pieces. One thing I'm curious about, Nemo: On English Wikipedia, I'm an admin (and have few other rights), and I'm able to grant "account creator." Is that unusual? (see below, I misunderstood, but I still have a question.) -Pete F (talk) 02:35, 2 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
And, Checkingfax: I see all three checkboxes here on Meta on Special:CreateAccount. But I'm an admin here (which includes Account Creator). I think you're not seeing them all because you don't have the Account Creator here on Meta Wiki. (It seems that with SUL, though, the Account Creator right might as well apply to all wikis.) Also, I'd think the "Create Account" button should go to Special:CreateAccount -- and maybe we should file a bug on phabricator: for that. I'll look around and see if such a bug exists. (I think I was mistaken -- I think this works correctly.) -Pete F (talk) 02:39, 2 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
Here is a similar bug, which established Special:CreateAccount: phabricator:T13897 -Pete F (talk) 02:41, 2 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
Nemo_bis, regarding this, is it unusual for an administrator to have the ability to check "confirmed" in Special:UserRights? And/or, is it considered inappropriate by some people for a mere admin to do so? Are the rights associated with "confirmed" and "autoconfirmed" different in some way?
Same questions, regarding granting "account creator" status, based on this diff. -Pete F (talk) 03:11, 2 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
Hi, Pete F. In the link where you see 3, I definitely only see 1 checkbox.
I have heard of confirmed and my takeaway was it was the same as auto-confirmed, but confirmed was manually invoked. Thanks for digging in on this. Cheers! Checkingfax (talk) 04:14, 2 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
Hi, Pete F. Meta:Confirmed users is the rundown on confirmed vs auto-confirmed. Cheers! Checkingfax (talk) 06:48, 2 May 2016 (UTC)Reply
Hi, Pete F. On the other page you explained how to crate a user account. This page is name Mass account creation, but there is nothing on it about how to create a user account. I guess that is what you are percolating on? Cheers! Checkingfax (talk) 07:33, 2 May 2016 (UTC)Reply

Why local pages?

[edit]

After so many years of SUL, shouldn't we start to handle the request of account creator as a global flag? And therefore remove the local "bureaucracy" related to this action? this is IMHO one of the small step that create a real functional SUL infrastrcuture.--Alexmar983 (talk) 13:01, 12 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
