One approach

One approach that can be taken is to make the gender question a purely open-ended field, i.e., no preset choices like Male or Female. This would allow respondents to write in descriptors that are most suitable without feeling they have to choose "other." Physiological gender

"If the goal of your survey is to understand gendered experiences or opinions, consider asking separate questions about physiological gender and gender identity."

It's more common and precise to talk about sex assigned at birth, since physical sex is made up of a wide range of not-always-overlapping characteristics (hormones, chromosomes, genital configuration, secondary sexual characteristics, and more). However, organizers should carefully consider why and whether they need this information before asking for it. Fhocutt (talk) 01:05, 3 February 2015 (UTC)
