Anti trolling/malware question

[edit]

Is there a way to edit the interface to prevent transparent image overlay <div>s linked to e.g. malware or shock images with interface edits, or will a spam blacklist-like examination of style="..." attributes be necessary? There have been recent GNAA-related attempts to troll WP:ANI with what very well may be malware targeted at controlling admins' browsers. Tashir 19:02, 28 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Add review and/or autoreview right

[edit]

I would like to suggest to logically add review and/or autoreview right to this group, so changes can be seen immediatelly and not wait ages for review.

Review, no way. Autoreview, maybe. Where are you running into this? (as a sidenote, these permissions would have to be added from testwiki or mediawiki.org as meta doesn't have either, and stewards do not posses either to the best of my knowledge). Without a very good reason, I would say no. Snowolf How can I help? 18:11, 12 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

RfC to make this a policy or guideline

Global userpage creation

[edit]

It seems that the recommendation to auto-create a global userpage is no longer possible. Is anyone aware of a working method of doing this? @User:Krinkle @User:Pathoschild @User:Hoo man --99of9 (talk) 10:17, 16 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

editprotected

[edit]

What is a typical use of editprotected right by interface editors? Are there examples of *.js or *.css that are protected and need to be edited by them? whym (talk) 00:16, 2 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Yes. This primarily applies to templates we have to edit, but sometimes wikis also import scripts from other namespaces (most commonly the Project namespace, e.g. Wikipedia:) in which those pages both can (and should be) additionally protected. –Krinkletalk 12:37, 2 September 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for answering, it totally makes sense to me. whym (talk) 12:46, 2 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

"By default"?

[edit]

"By default, appointment will be temporary, lasting any time up to a year..." What does this mean? Is "by default" = a) "normally", b) "thus far", or perhaps c) "without exception"? --Pxos (talk) 17:34, 15 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

Normally, I think. --MF-W 18:49, 17 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

How to make a request

[edit]

The Communication section should probably mention how one can ask global interface editors to do something - there doesn't seem to be a separate requests page for them. --Tgr (talk) 08:10, 9 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

+1 to this request. Specific example: How are editors from small wikis meant to request assistance from this group of technically-adept editors? E.g. to change Main Page designs, or fix broken complex templates, or similar.
AFAICT, the page Meta:Requests and proposals points towards General requests as the recommendation, but that page has a big "This page is rarely watched [...]" notice at the top.
Thanks. Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 19:26, 16 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
Ah, I guess Tech is the right place. I guess I'll boldly link to that? Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 20:08, 17 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
@~riley: Hi :) (A) Thanks for all that you do, I see you around a lot! (B) I'm wondering if you could advise on this section. I had boldly added a hatnote pointer, but you removed it a few days later. Another instance of this general problem arose today, where I saw someone asking "Where can I report an issue with MediaWiki:common.js on a wiki in a language I don't speak?", and I was going to link them to Tech and also mention that I had added a pointer from this page, but now that you've removed it I'm no longer sure! Hope that makes sense. Cheers, Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 18:37, 17 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Quiddity (WMF): Hi Quiddity, sorry for the bold removal! I was not aware of an ongoing conversation surrounding this and didn't intend to step on any toes. I was originally just going to move it from a notice to the Communication section to remove top-heavyness and to standardize with the other group pages (no notice on top of GS, ABF, etc). I ultimately decided to remove it altogether because these requests are monitored by interface editors, stewards and global syops (all have interface editor) at Steward requests/Miscellaneous. Can we meet in the middle on a solution of adding a sentence mentioning both (technical requests to SRM, general help at Tech) in the communication section? ~riley (talk) 22:00, 17 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
@~riley: Of course! Anything works, that helps improve the ease with which people can find the answer.
Ideally this information (where to go to ask for help) would be consistently discoverable from all those related groups' pages. +1 to any standardization you can bring about.
Thanks again for thinking about it, and of course for being one of the people who actually helps with the requests!! TTFN, Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 22:06, 17 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
Done Wordsmithing changes always welcome! Again, my apologies for the removal. ~riley (talk) 19:35, 18 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Looking for other site-UI-improvement scripts, gadgets, ideas, and general feedback

[edit]

Hey, Interface editors. For the Desktop Improvements project, we're especially looking for information about any gadgets/userscripts that you might know of, if they are aimed at making the overall site experience better for (potentially) all users (i.e. both readers and editors of the wikis). Please add any missing links/ideas you know of, to: mw:Reading/Web/Desktop Improvements#Phase 1: Design ideas

We'd also like your feedback on the ideas and mockups we have collected and made so far - How could they be further improved? What important considerations are not currently documented? If you can, please take a look through the project page and sub-pages such as mw:Reading/Web/Desktop Improvements/Wikimania Stockholm research report and share your feedback about the overall ideas and specific details. Thank you! Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 22:17, 30 October 2019 (UTC)Reply
