Different approaches
[edit]I want to start discussion here to gather an understanding about our position about global templates now and discussions on different platforms. I plan to update phab:T251895 with this info. mw:Global templates - additional page that it is also desirable to translate into the local language. There is different ways to map templates before globalization:
- We can do it on Wikidata so everybody can participate with little steps: d:Wikidata:Property_proposal/Wikipedia_infobox_field - community can start to gather information about on compatibility of
templatedata
info (see d:User:ElanHR/Proposals/Schema_for_describing_templates_and_their_fields) - We can make JSON files and store it on commons in
.tab
files - as I understand this is how mw:Multilingual Templates and Modules works (see also phab:T224721) - We can make Central Global Repository for Templates, Lua modules, and Gadgets (phab:T121470) - since the work of templates is tied to JS and lua code, we need to think about some general solution
Is there any other approaches or vital discussions on the problem?Carn (talk) 13:48, 25 January 2021 (UTC)
- Please see the timeline on the projectpage. The coming months support from local projects will be gathered. After enough local projects support is gathered a reguest for a program will be written. One of the first phases of the program might be consulting with the local projects for their specific needs, and sharpen the problem description. It is now way to early to discuss solutions. And finally WMF engineer and developers will work on creating solutions to cater our needs. Ad Huikeshoven (talk) 13:30, 26 January 2021 (UTC)
