Thanks for your suggestions. Reworking and rewording these links are high on our "To Do" list. What do you think of the following?
We are trying to go for as short and concise a label as possible. We want all this information available but tests have shown less clutter on the donation pages equals more donations per page view.

Ryan Kaldari Appeal Test

[edit]

Reading the section on the Ryan Kaldari Appeal Test, I recognized that I emotianlly react quite similar to Jimmy Wales' hatless photo and Ryan Kaldaris hatless photo, yet consideralby different to the photo with hat. That made me look for reasons. One I suspected was that photos are of the same outer size making the face with hat of smaller absolute size, another one was the different facial expression of the photos. I incrementally increased the hat photos size, finding it as appealing to me as the hatless one as soon as the areas occupied by the faces became equal, and the photo with hat became the more appealing the more it was enlarged in comparison to the other one independent of the facial expression. I had both photos shown side-a-side. Maybe, this is a hint for further research. --Purodha Blissenbach 13:05, 21 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

You may find it interesting that this last Friday (2011-10-21) we ran a test trying different sizes of banner images with the staff photo. As we thought, the bigger the banner and bigger the faces the better the banner preformed. I'm not sure the confidence level of the test at the moment but it will be uploaded soon.

the translated fundraiser landing page has appeared on CYWP. It is here https://donate.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:FundraiserLandingPage?uselang=cy&country=GB&template=Lp-layout-default&appeal=Appeal-Brandon&form-countryspecific=Form-countryspecific-control&utm_medium=sitenotice&utm_source=B11_Donate_Brandon_Control&utm_campaign=C11_1107

unfortunately the three links: contributing monthly, other ways to give and frequently asked questions currently lead to blank pages. Am not sure whether this is the right place to report this or over on WM UK. Please advise. Lloffiwr 00:12, 8 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hi Lloffiwr, no this was our mistake sorry. Wikimedia UK are running their own banners and landing pages this year, so the WMF ones aren't set up to handle visitors from the UK. Unfortunately we had a slight glitch earlier where we accidentally displayed a set of WMF banners everywhere. It was fixed within seconds, but you might still have seen the banners because of caching. Thanks for reporting it. Pcoombe (WMF) 00:52, 8 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

wrong currency for Estonia

[edit]

Hi, the Estonian donation page [1] shows kr (kroons) as currency, but now we have euro. --WikedKentaur 21:09, 8 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Turkish Lira

[edit]

Hello, I have just come across with one of the fundraising pages and noticed that it uses the old currency. However, Turkey has recently got rid of six zeros the currency. Under the heading of "Bağış miktarı TL" (Donation Amount TL), it says: 8750000 (which should be 8.75), 17500000 (which should be 17.50), 35000000 (which should be 35), 135000000 (which should be 135), 175000000 (which should be 175) and 440000000 (which should be 440). --Seksen iki yüz kırk beş 21:27, 8 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

This is fixed now. Pcoombe (WMF) 19:49, 9 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

How many staff has Wikimedia?

[edit]

The Jimmy Banner gives 93 but every other banner gives 73. Is this on purpose or does Jimmy need some remedial maths lessons? Intelligentsium 03:38, 11 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Well, we have to be precise here. WMF has xx staff, but Wikimedia as an international has more than that because you have to count in staff from WMDE (currently 21), WMFR, WMUK, etc. Therefore WMDE says mostly Wikimedia hast "less than 100 employees". Till Mletzko (WMDE) 07:36, 11 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
The difference was partly due to whether we included contractors in the count or not, at one point we weren't but eventually we settled on including them. The latest pages, which are being used in the actual fundraiser, use a template for this number which we are going to keep in sync with the "official" staff count from wikimediafoundation.org. Jimmy Letter on donate.wikimedia.org

[edit]

Dear collegues! Please do not change numbers with non-english texts, if not use PLURAL function. This Russian version of Jimmy Letter is incorrect. I update Russian text with using PLURAL function - please re-publish it. Thanks! --Kaganer 12:12, 11 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Talk:Fundraising

[edit]

The page Talk:Fundraising is a redirect to Talk:2007/Donate. [3]

It needs updating, or re-targetting, or something - but I can't edit it.

I also think it would be helpful if Fundraising had some link to a page where users can ask questions. Chzz 21:04, 11 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Ok I've updated those pages a bit. Thanks. Pcoombe (WMF) 21:51, 11 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Fundraising campaign in 2011

[edit]

I want to suggest that in every Wikipedia, local editor will appeal for Fundraising in local Wikipedia. Sometimes a local editor could appeal more to the people than editor from another country.

Last year was an appeal by local editor of the Hebrew Wikipedia, and the results were good. Hanay 09:25, 13 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Anybody, nobody !!!??? Hanay 05:29, 14 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
Hi Hanay, please remember... the fundraising team is literally working round the clock right now to get the fundraiser up on time. I'm sure they'll respond to you the first chance they have.  :) Philippe (WMF) 06:40, 14 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
Hi Hanay, yes we are planning to put up personal appeals from editors from different countries. We have already tested a few and are still interviewing more editors. Please help spread the word and email wikistory@wikimedia.org if you'd like to share your Wikimedia story. Thanks Meganhernandez 06:52, 18 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
Hello Megan, in what language are the editors supposed to tell their story? If everything has to go through English, that is a tricky bottleneck for many. Kind regards --Ziko 15:00, 22 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Donor Banner Logos

[edit]

I want to suggest that for every donation, the donor receives a "Donor Banner" image or button for their own website.

Similar support banners, logos, buttons and images are available for everyone except donors. Please visit link below for such examples.

http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Support/en

Folks would be more inclined to donate if they were able to link to an individual donor ID with perhaps statistics and their donor ID number. It could also serve as a portal for social purposes and networking.

Good idea. Chzz 20:15, 13 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Direct replacement numbers in published texts

[edit]

All published Letters have changed some numbers, in comparison with the source texts for the meta: 454 vs 422 million different people, 95 vs 93 staff count. So you can do for the English, but not for many other languages! Please update English source texts for all Letters, and do not change anything in the published texts without proofreading.--Kaganer 07:24, 14 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Aye, this has been changed as you probably know; we have decided on set numbers to use, and updated that in translations. Jon Harald Søby (WMF) 13:24, 16 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

The "If everyone..." banner's format seems misleading

[edit]

I'm seeing a banner that that says "If everyone reading this donated €5, our fundraiser would be over today. Please donate to keep Wikipedia free." followed by a progress bar for the daily fundraiser target.

Showing the daily target progress bar with a message like that is misleading. If you have a such a message, then use a progress bar that shows the whole fundraiser's target, not just one day's, please. --KFP 00:13, 19 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Why is the minimum amount now raised to €10? Is the campaign not going well? SpeakFree 00:45, 22 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
Banners change: changing the amount of money is a test itself to see which number is more appealing. If you check last year's donations you'll find that the amounts of most of them were the same suggested by the appeal on the landing page. --Elitre 11:15, 25 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
I know I'm coming a bit late to the conversation but what part of the message do you find misleading? If every one seeing the banner in a day donated €5, then we would have more then enough money. Should the banner say "in a day" or something like it?

UK no feedback / contact

[edit]

There is still no way, from the UK 'donate' page, for people to seek help / leave feedback. I reported this on 11 November. The US versions at least have the email (problemsdonating@whatever) but the UK ones do not.

Hence, users who are having any of various problems donating have no way to get help. Chzz 10:40, 22 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Also, can people really write to that address in all languages? I see it's shown everywhere. --Nemo 11:36, 23 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
As the person answering the UK emails from donors, I have to disagree with you on that point, Chzz: On the left of the page, there is a link that says 'If you have any questions, please email us.', and links to fundraising(_AT_)wikimedia.org.uk, an address which I answer. It averages a few messages each day. We're also required by our direct debit provider to provide a phone number that people can ring if they have problems with Direct Debits (which is visible when they try and donate by Direct Debit). However, you're right that this email address could be a bit more prominent. I will have a word with The Land (talk · contribs) and see what we can do. I do not understand that; I have just logged out, and clicked 'donate', and I see no means of contact. I have added a screen-dump of the page I am seeing, here. Chzz 20:29, 24 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
Ah, I see - we're talking about different donate pages. Yes, that should be updated, you're right. I'll see to it. Thanks for letting me know, and I'm sorry it's taken so long to fix! Chase me ladies, I'm the Cavalry 12:42, 25 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Fundraising 2011/Thank You Mail and sister projects

[edit]

If I understand correctly, the WMF is currently running the fundraising banners only on Wikipedia (luckily, given that every banner, appeal and whatever talks only about Wikipedia). The thank you mail doesn't consider the possibility that a donor cares about other Wikimedia projects, which is annoying enough, but I suppose that at least if banners will ever be run on sister projects the thank you will be corrected, won't it? --Nemo 11:50, 23 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

We are working on getting something going on the other projects and we did manage to get something up for a while be it needs work. As you pointed out we need to get a "thank you" page as well as other thing customized for other projects.

Headers

[edit]

Please don't use first level headers in the transcluded subpages. First level headers are horrible in general and they comletely broke this TOC in particular, making it really hard to understand what each section was about. Thank you, Nemo 11:50, 23 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Beside learning from banners'stats

[edit]

How can WMF not be interested in knowing why people chose to (or not to) donate, if they encountered any issues or if they have feedback on the whole thing? Who are they supposed to write to (in their language)? I keep receiving messages like this. --Elitre 11:19, 25 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Also, can someone please explain how donating can technically hide the banner, as repeatedly said by @Wikipedia on Twitter? --Elitre 11:32, 25 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
As far as I understanding re:hiding the banner, it happens when you visit the 'thankyou' page, after donating. It could possibly be a cookie which simply tracks whether or not you've donated - but I'm not a technically-minded person, so I can't say for sure. Chase me ladies, I'm the Cavalry 13:32, 25 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
Yes, that page sets a cookie which disables all banners, according to WMF staff on the fundraising list. Nemo 21:54, 25 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
Nemo is correct, it sets a cookie. Just like closing the banner with the x does. (So why anyone would write a freaking Chrome extension to hide banners is beyond me.) Jon Harald Søby (WMF) 17:01, 28 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
[edit]

In the Fundraising 2011 landing page, there's always a link called "Make a monthly donation". Well, the link there doesn't forward to any other page, hence there's no way to raise a monthly donation. Clicking on the link, you just get to the same page again. It is the same in English and in all the translations. Shouldn't we delete this link, at least for now, as long as there is no explanation regarding a way to make a routinely donation? Leaving it the way it is now makes no sense and might even make the page appear amateur. What do you think - am I right? Ldorfman 23:47, 25 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

I don't see the same page again. On the right the button repeats "Make a monthly donation", and the amount you choose is the one you want to pay every month. If you have PayPal, you can verify this without actually donating. --Elitre 10:39, 26 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
OK. Now I noticed that difference - after clicking on the link, in the new page the button is changed to "Make a monthly donation" and the amounts offered are a bit different. Still, it looks very similar (I would expect different colors for example) and more importantly, there isn't even one sentence about the way it is done (I'm looking for a short simple explanation like "We're going to charge your credit card/Pay Pal account every month for a year... if, from any reason, would you like to stop making these monthly donations please write to...") - This should be mentioned even before clicking on the button and reading it in the PayPal page. Ldorfman 13:08, 26 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
I think this has been fixed – at least it works correctly for me. Are you still having this problem? Jon Harald Søby (WMF) 17:00, 28 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Fundraising Statistics

http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Special:ContributionStatistics

The Fundraising statistics links on Fundraising 2011/Tech stats and resources seem not to be working, could someone update the target location (if necessary), or explain why they are down? I haven't tried visiting them before now this year, so I don't know if this is a recent issue or something that has been going on since the start of this campaign. Dragons flight 02:16, 28 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

I think this answers to your questions, at least partially. --Elitre 14:23, 28 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
Yes, the problem was that the extension didn't cache well, so when lots of people visited it it would reload the data every time, overloading the server and crashing Wikipedia. The extension is being rewritten to be less vulnerable as we speak. Jon Harald Søby (WMF) 16:57, 28 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

The fancy up-to-the-minute accurate graph was nice; but if it's too server intensive, isn't there a way to at least give regular updates about how the fundraiser is going? A table with a few numbers, updated daily, doesn't seem like it should take up any server time at all.. for example, how much money has been raised so far (roughly)? I haven't been able to find this information anywhere.. 24.84.9.97 17:39, 2 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

I see about adding a daily updated graph somewhere. I have to talk to tech about a stable place to add the graph.
