At the time this page was written, the en:w:LZW compression GIF was using was under patent by UniSys; that patent has now expired. PNG in contrast was always an open standard, and has enjoyed much wider use for still images in recent years than GIF has. Arlo Barnes (talk) 16:44, 4 August 2017 (UTC)
