Why a copy-paste instead of a renaming

[edit]

Hello Martin Urbanec, I am not sure to understand why you have copy and pasted Setting_up_an_internal_Wikimedia_wiki instead of just renaming it? Actually, this makes translators to translate again the same text. Do you think you can restore page and its translations to just upgrading them? --Pols12 (talk) 11:45, 8 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Hello @Pols12, this is not a simple copy&paste move. Rather, I wasn't myself aware of the Setting up an internal Wikimedia wiki page when I first wrote the draft. When people notified me about it, I merged those two pages together. Since the new page is more general, I decided to merge from Setting up an internal Wikimedia wiki to this page, Create new wiki. Sadly, I'm not able to assign translations of an old translatable page to a new page, that's not yet marked as translatable (I need to consult its content with other people involved in the wiki creation process). While it will make the translators to translate some of the content again, I don't think there's a better way to do it with the Translate extension. @Martin Urbanec: I think it might be good and possibly relatively easy to fix this. IIUC, it could be fixed by:
  1. Restore the original page.
  2. Merge any content changes from this page, into that one.
  3. Rename that page, to this one's title. (or just change this one into a redirect to there)
I believe that would (A) preserve the existing translation efforts, and (B) preserve the watchlist status for anyone who was interested in the topic [related thing I wrote: Learning patterns/Every new page starts off unwatched ].
Does that seem correct, or am I missing something that makes it more complex? Thanks! Quiddity (talk) 18:04, 20 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Martin Urbanec: I've done steps 1 & 2, but will leave step 3 (and "Mark for translation") steps to someone else, for sanity-check. Quiddity (talk) 03:48, 19 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thank you Quiddity, but it is not enough: an admin is needed to restore translation pages. I have asked them to do it, without answers for now. Can you support my demand, please?
I think there is no easy way to restore translation units, so I will re-create them thanks to Special:PageMigration, but for this way, translation pages need to be restored before marking target page for translation (else, I’m pretty sure system will block). -- Pols12 (talk) 05:37, 19 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Quiddity and Pols12: The page was intended to stay under this name, as it's no longer about creating an internal Wikimedia wiki, but about any wiki. I assume this will get fixed when this is done. --Martin Urbanec (talk) 20:34, 19 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Once the translations are restored, it should be easy for any of us to rename it. (Probably we should rename it to Create a new wiki for better grammar and to avoid having to deal with deleting or rename-hacking this existing page!). HTH. Quiddity (talk) 20:59, 19 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Quiddity and Martin Urbanec, this looks good for me. All translation have been well restored by Hasley, so you can safely moved this page to a properer name. Pols12 (talk) 21:49, 19 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
Now done. Quiddity (talk) 01:48, 29 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
