Phabricator

[edit]

Useful table. Will you file (actionable) bug reports and feature requests in Phabricator, in the appropriate code components, for the relevant developers to be aware? --Nemo 16:08, 16 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi Nemo bis -- Yes. We did that last year, and we'll do it this year. It'll take a minute, because there are a lot more proposals this year, but as you say, it's necessary for developers to have all the relevant information in Phabricator. -- DannyH (WMF) (talk) 16:55, 16 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

"Wikitext editor syntax highlighting" - what WMF work is there to do?

[edit]

I don't want to take anything away from the enthusiasm for the subject proposal, but given this is already in plan, what work beyond typing out a {{done}} is there for WMF to do? Perhaps the tied #11/#12 should be considered to be in the Top 10? Stevie is the man! TalkWork 16:51, 16 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi Stevietheman. We've had some early conversations with the Editing team this week, and we'll probably be able to help with syntax highlighting. It's not an easy project -- the current version of syntax highlighting takes an unacceptably long time to load on long pages, so it needs some investigation to figure out a solution. It's not top of the list for Editing right now, so our team may be able to work on it before they do. That's part of our role at the Foundation, to work with other teams on features that active contributors really want.
As for going beyond the top 10 -- we have more people on the team than we did at this time last year, so we're hoping to get a lot done in 2017. If everything in the top 10 gets addressed, then I promise we won't take the rest of the year off. :) -- DannyH (WMF) (talk) 17:11, 16 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for the response. It clarifies a lot. If any performance enhancements being done in the new version could be backported to what we're using now, that would be greatly appreciated. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 13:17, 17 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
Stevietheman: Do you mean the wikitext editor that you're using now, or a syntax highlighting gadget? -- DannyH (WMF) (talk) 17:41, 17 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
The syntax highlighting gadget I use on enwiki to enhance the wikitext editor. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 19:10, 17 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

What happened with the 75/25?

[edit]

On the description of the survey, you said you were dedicating 75% of your time on the top10 wishes, and 25% of time on "smaller projects". Have you identified the "smaller projects"?--Ninovolador (talk) 22:55, 19 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for asking -- I wrote up the current status here: Community Tech/Projects for smaller groups/Notes. It's going to take a little while to figure it out, I think that we'll be able to announce things around the end of January. Are there any that you're particularly interested in? -- DannyH (WMF) (talk) 02:16, 20 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
#40 ("Hide trusted users" checkbox option on watchlists and related/recent changes (RC) pages) is largely about helping Recent Changes Patrollers, and this is a group in several of the Wikipedias. Would this count? Stevie is the man! TalkWork 16:12, 20 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
Oh, thanks for pointing that out. I'll take a look. -- DannyH (WMF) (talk) 16:15, 20 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. I forgot to point out that this proposal also helps another group (or set of groups) as well: WikiProjects that use Related Changes for project-wide change patrol. This is likely a considerably smaller target than RC Patrollers, though. Stevie is the man! TalkWork 16:22, 20 December 2016 (UTC)Reply
Well, selfishly speaking, i was thinking on "my" request, wish#44, #1 Commons wish. --Ninovolador (talk) 22:35, 20 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi Ninovolador, thanks for the suggestion. I added it to the list on that smaller groups notes page, and we'll take a look at it. Thanks! -- DannyH (WMF) (talk) 01:20, 4 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
@DannyH (WMF): Hello. I imagine you were very busy since January, sorry to interrupt your work. I am interested to know if you have fix the final list of interest for "smaller projects". Plus, I also want to point out the highest requested proposal for Wiktionary, #97 Add "Insert Citation" to VisualEditor, a very important tool for those projects and also useful to expand Wikisource diffusion. If it is too late (probably), we will suggest this idea again next year, or find a dev at the next hackatohon. It's just to know how things are going. Noé (talk) 16:15, 11 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Noé: Hi, I'm sorry it took me so long to respond to your message, I was on vacation for a coupole weeks. I apologize for how long this part of the process has taken. Our team is going to meet next week to determine the list of 25% projects we're going to investigate this year, so I'll have some news to share then. Thanks for the suggestion about #97, I'll add that to the list we're considering. -- DannyH (WMF) (talk) 20:08, 26 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
