Wikimedia is deliberately not a social media website. The lack of any concept of a user profile built-in (instead relying on only the tools people build themselves) is deliberate and should not be changed. * Pppery * it has begun 16:43, 9 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Not only is not a social media website, some people also don't like sharing private information like country of origin or accounts on other platforms. I believe we should leave this to users themselves. A09|(pogovor) 20:57, 26 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hey @Newt713 thanks for sharing this wish. I'm curious if the similar principles you've shared would need to be on a net-new user page, or could they be on an existing user's page? Just wanting to understand the difference from your POV.

Ideas

[edit]

Hi @NGOgo, I think I understand your wish. I would recommend removing "Social-Media-Like" from the description as it will probably garner knee-jerk negative reactions.

I think a userpage generator would be interesting for new users (and old ones!). There could be items to insert like babel boxes (which I think are nearly essential for some projects) and the rest of your dot points - the WikiQuote element was a nice touch. With each item optional it should satisfy the complaint about sharing private info. I would also suggest a mini gallery with the last few files a user has uploaded.

w:Wikipedia:User page design guide seems to backup your wish.

I know userpage design can be a top priority for new users. I recall the first few edits of a new user on English Wikipedia all being questions about inserting userboxes. That user would later become a Featured article coordinator. Commander Keane (talk) 10:45, 21 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

I had the same wish 2 years ago. I believe it would be of interest to anyone supporting the idea to take a look here and on the subsequent links mentioned there where there are a lot of details discussed about structured user pages. - Klein Muçi (talk) 23:01, 21 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
