Examples?
[edit]Hey @Pseudonym1409 thanks for sharing this wish. Could you provide some examples or use cases for this feature? How or why would it help your workflow? JWheeler-WMF (talk) 19:44, 29 July 2024 (UTC)
- @JWheeler-WMF
- Here you can see an example from practice
- https://de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=EPC-QR-Code&action=history
- Search in version history for "Einleitung: Firmenwerbung in der Einleitung neutralisiert" with time stamp 00:47, 12. Jul. 2024
- and compare it with the previous version. As you can see I've only changed the Intro content, but to do that you have to edit the whole page. There is no way to edit only the intro as you can edit a normal chapter. So I've requested to add an option to edit only the intro in the same way as you can already do it with any existing chapter.

- @Pseudonym1409 Can you clarify why, for you, it is a problem to edit the whole page ? Section editing has primarily two functions I think. The first is essentially, to 'skip' most of the wiki code you don't care about, so that it is easier to find the text that you want to edit, by having less to read through. The second functionality is that it can be slightly faster, as you have to download less of the page and load that into the editor. But with the top edit, there isn't anything to skip, so point 1 is a lot less significant I think ? I'd love to hear why you think you prefer to use top section editing. —TheDJ (talk • contribs) 14:39, 4 September 2024 (UTC)
- @TheDJ it would provide a better overview in the history log. If someone reviews changes in the history log, it becomes easier if you realize at the beginning that you only have to look at the introduction and therefore do not have to check the whole page. As you can see in the support below, this logical approach already exists elsewhere. In my opinion, the reason for the request is self-explanatory. Thanks Pseudonym1409 (talk) 13:13, 4 October 2024 (UTC)

Support
[edit]My strong support to this proposal. It would be really useful — not to load the whole page. Interestingly, on some language versions of Wikipedia it is done and it is easy. Russian WP, for instance, does have the possibility to edit the Preamble /* Преамбула */: the same [edit] link as before any other section. If I need to do this on English or French WP I should start editing the first section, then manually change “section=1” to “section=0” in the address bar. Why isn’t it still fixed?.. 2dk (talk) 19:39, 30 July 2024 (UTC)
- Yes, it looks like at least 163 wikis have the EditTop gadget installed, 8 have EditZeroth, and 3 have Section0 (which provide the same function). These gadgets are a workaround for the fact that this feature doesn't exist in MediaWiki proper. You can enable it on English and French Wikipedias, but not German it looks like. Already solved
[edit]From the linked phab issue: go in preference/gadget/ under "Appearance" check the box "Add an [edit] link for the lead section of a page". So please mark this proposal as already-implemented (or Delivered). Prototyperspective (talk) 16:21, 16 October 2024 (UTC)

- Thanks, didn't notice that but the request to make this as solved still stands and I think info on why/how it's been solved should be included with the mark. Ideally most reasonable Wishlist proposals would get marked as solved sooner or later, each with info on how to find/use the requested functionality. Prototyperspective (talk) 08:35, 18 October 2024 (UTC)
- What SWilson has said is that it's not solved. Gadgets are community-driven and set up on each wiki. Besides, the mobile interface already provides editing just the lead section, so this asymmetry between the desktop and mobile interface and between the wikis that have the gadget set up and the others is a problem, and a technically addressable one. Nardog (talk) 03:50, 19 October 2024 (UTC)
- Ups, thanks for explaining. However, due to edittop enabling the mentioned setting in the preferences this is already solved. At most this would be about also enabling this Appearance setting in the other wikis which doesn't seem like a technical issue and would require the title to be changed to e.g. "Button to edit just lead in all Wikipedias".
