Limitations?
[edit]I see how this feature would be beneficial. So far, there are some system warnings when reseting or modifying a user signature for ie. not linking to the user's talkpage. Instead of blocking users, we should warn them through these system warnings and prevent the change of user signature. I believe we could expand this wish further to have filters in place for potentially bad HTML code (like unclosed HTML tags or alike) if such system is not already in place. Thanks for any further input regarding this matter. Best regards, A09|(pogovor) 12:44, 29 July 2024 (UTC)
- Hello @A09
- For clarification and to avoid misunderstandings:
- This is actively used by multiple users to disguise their own identity or to pretend that more people are taking part in a debate than is the case in reality. They do it on theire own talk page and on other places too. In other words, the original creator of a post creates a fake signature using the method described.

- The fact that third parties could change a signature after it has been created is not part of my concern. Pseudonym1409 (talk) 21:18, 29 July 2024 (UTC)
- I see. In my thoughts this isn't really an issue. It's just a reversed signature. It's not like a gross impersonation (ie. like I would sign myself under your username) however I do not know local dewiki rules to make further judgements on this case. - I see this as a more policy-related issue than a technical issue, to be honest. --SHB2000 (t • c) 06:27, 31 July 2024 (UTC)
- Agreed. The fact that a "signature" is just a blob of text not a fundamental building block is fundamental to how wikis work. Failure to realize this is why Flow failed. * Pppery * it has begun 21:33, 2 August 2024 (UTC)
- It becomes a technical issue with these very Replys here. More than once I @-pinged by the displayed nickname, which turned out to be some other (inactive) user's login name: Pppery (ping me) 16:56, 20 September 2024 (UTC)
- Just noting that the edit directly above was joke-signed by Ponor, (diff). As for the wish, as Pppery eluded to, treating signatures as fundamental building blocks would solve it. And fix Ponor's ping problem. Users not wanting to be deceived would opt to display pure usernames only. If you want to indulge in the "socialify Wikimedia" movement (ie custom signatures) I guess an option to display them could exist. To differentiate users, system generated icons could be displayed (discussed on the User-Icons wish). Having said all that, signatures work ok on the wikis I use and although a good idea, changing them is a low priority for me. Commander Keane (talk) 21:46, 21 October 2024 (UTC)
- You've very badly misunderstood my point. * Pppery * it has begun 21:54, 21 October 2024 (UTC)
