Talk:Community Tech/Deprecation of RelatedSites extension

I am here because of this posting. To remove all instances of the Related Sites extension, we should be able to do the following:

  • Suppose a Wikivoyage article is linked to the Wikidata element A
  • A Wikipedia article is linked to the Wikidata element B
  • We need to link those two articles via the field 'In other projects' in the left panel

How to do this?

This is an important functionality, because the logic of Wikidata elements is not always the same as the logic of making links between the articles of Wikipedia and Wikivoyage. --Alexander (talk) 19:47, 4 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Atsirlin: The approach that English Wikivoyage took was to first try to resolve the Wikidata mis-match, and if that wasn't possible, to use a new set of templates called RelatedWikipedia and RelatedCommonsCat. These templates create sister project link boxes at the end of the article, somewhat similar to what you would see on English or Russian Wikipedia. Here's an example. I realize this may not be satisfactory to everyone, but it seems like a good approach for dealing with these edge cases. If you think Russian Wikivoyage needs more time to prepare for the deprecation, let us know. Ryan Kaldari (WMF) (talk) 04:41, 10 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
Ryan Kaldari (WMF), thank you for your response! It does not seem to be what we are looking for, because Wikivoyage has no 'External links' section. For example, at English Wikivoyage these links are just hanging in the place where the article should have ended. Presently, it seems to me that the only viable solution is to remove such links, thus reducing connectivity between different Wikimedia projects. --Alexander (talk) 07:38, 10 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

In the announcement at our Lounge was mentioned that the extension is used to link to other wikis. But thats not the purpose of that extension, absolutely not. It is used the link to important related sites in the same wiki. Thats why the link were originally placed in the sidebar. One example: You have an article about a country like Cambodia. So in the sidebar (now at the bottom) you have the related sites like Khmer phrasebook, Sustainable travel in Cambodia, Gay travel in Cambodia, Itineraries in Cambodia. So these links exist always at the same position and user have an easy access to it. These are not inter project links Wikidata can not provide this service. -- DerFussi 21:04, 4 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

That is RelatedArticles, not RelatedSites. — JJMC89(T·C) 15:51, 9 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
OK.. this is really confusing. -- DerFussi 12:33, 10 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
