Questions about the reporting of disability status on 2024 Report

[edit]

Hello. Since the Community Insights/2024 Survey Questions specifically asked, "On what grounds is your group discriminated against?" and included the response category of "Disability", I am hoping that you publish the results of that. As far as I can tell, the WMF has never reported on editor disability status, and that is especially pertinent to research I'm doing, so I am hoping to be able to report on any WMF metrics on this. Thanks Hexatekin (talk) 19:01, 28 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hi again @Hexatekin! In the 2024 weighted survey responses, 21% (20.7% to be precise) of respondents answered that they belong to a discriminated group. Of those respondents, 16.8% identified as belonging to a discriminated group on the basis of disability. With that, we can estimate that at least 3.5% (.207 * .168) of respondents to the 2024 survey identify as living with a disability. However, as you point out here, the way a question is asked can shape how people respond, and in this case someone would have to identify as belonging to a discriminated group to be asked about disability, causing the potential for underestimation. We have not published these specific results as part of the report due to this potential for underestimation (though I’m not necessarily against it), and instead use these variables to look at whether differences in other variables exist by those we know identify as such vs. those who do not. -TAndic (WMF) (talk) 19:39, 31 January 2025 (UTC)Reply
Hi again! I would encourage you to state the exact number of respondents, instead of "more than 3000 Wikimedians", and to say something about the results relevant to the question about "belonging to a discriminated group on the basis of disability" in the upcoming 2024 Report. I am a bit confused about how you said in your above reply that 16.8% identified as "belonging to a discriminated group on the basis of disability", but that we can estimate that "at least 3.5% of respondents to the 2024 survey identify as living with a disability." So is it 16.8% or 3.5%? or how did you arrive at the 3.5% from the 16.8%? I want to understand this properly, to be able to cite these stats in an upcoming academic paper.
