Purpose?

Yes, questions like the one about a Congress of Representatives are completely inappropriate. This census shouldn't be about trying to find a consensus for new policies. --Tango 13:37, 16 November 2007 (UTC)

How will it be held?

How will the census be done? There needs to be some way to do it privately, because most people won't want to volunteer their income publicly. Have you considered something similar to the survey I ran for the Wikipedia Signpost? The devs might be able to help with something like that; I could as well, but I think it's something that might be better handled on the Wikimedia servers. Ral315 (talk) 09:30, 23 October 2007 (UTC)

Representatives

Would it be appropriate to ask the representatives listed here to link to their respective usernames at the project they represent? To answer all your questions

Yes, it is meant to only collect demographic data, yes, there may be a few other questions added in about the project a user is working on (but only a few major things not, "do you like our sidebar" or something dodge like that. Yes, it will be created like the link above, I have the software working - all I need is the questions. I am waiting to have my toolserv account reset-up but, it is taking ages, currently it is on my own servers. Symode09 00:33, 17 November 2007 (UTC)

Wikimedian Demographics on Wikiversity

I had started v:Wikimedian Demographics several months ago, but then abandoned it when the Census was announced to see how things went with this. Since the Census seems to have stalled, I re-started it, and think it might make a good alternative to what was attempted here.

The Wikiversity resource operates differently than the Census, using templates, categories, and response boxes (modified userboxes) to gather, display, and organize the data. The categories in particular can eventually be used to create interpretations of the results (in the short term, users can make their own interpretations using DynamicPageList, which is enabled on Wikiversity).

The scope of Wikiversity may also serve as a benefit for attracting participants, since survey templates can be created for any subject, rather than only subjects that pertain exclusively to the Wikimedia Foundation's wikis. Thus surveys and data can be used to address subjects of interest to various segments of the community beyond just those who are interested in the wikis themselves. For example, one of the initial surveys asks about the US presidential primaries, and we expect to eventually see surveys about everything from global politics to music preference to education level. In many cases, surveys can be tied to content improvement efforts as well (e.g., the Presidential election survey asks participants to rate Wikipedia articles, and so on).
