Save the date: Celtic Knot Wikimedia Language Conference, September 2024 is coming to Ireland![edit]

Hello all, We are very happy to announce that the conference dedicated to minoritized languages on the Wikimedia projects will be back for its 7th edition, to be held in Waterford City, Ireland, in September 2024. The exact date will be announced as soon as possible.

Getting back to its roots, in the Celtic languages and nations, the event gathers people from communities and languages that are underrepresented on the Wikimedia projects. It is a place where people working on growing and maintaining their communities can meet, learn from each other, and support each other on topics like community growth, technical tools, or collaboration with partners.

Celtic Knot 2024, will be an in-person event, held in Waterford, Ireland's oldest city which has an abundance of cultural heritage and history. We are currently exploring options to make conference resources (talks, panels, etc.) available to those who are unable to attend in person.

We are currently gathering input from the community to build a conference tailored to your needs: whether you attended a previous edition of the Celtic Knot or not, if you are involved in underrepresented languages on the Wikimedia Projects, please take a few minutes to fill in the community survey (available in English, Irish and Welsh), and make sure to share the information with your local group. The survey is open until January 21st. Many thanks in advance! As we are starting to build the concept and the program, we will regularly improve the existing event pages on Meta and post updates on the talk page of the event.

The core organizing team is composed of Amy O’Riordan (WCI), Sophie Fitzpatrick (WCI), Daria Cybulska (WMUK), Richard Nevell (WMUK), supported by Léa Lacroix (community engagement consultant). If you have ideas or suggestions, if you would like to get involved in the conference, feel free to contact any of us.

Online participation?[edit]

Hi, it's great to see that this conference will be taking place later this year, as this is a really important topic. Will online participation (presentation/attendance) be possible? Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 20:23, 10 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi Mike, thanks for your message! It will be possible for people to watch the conference contents remotely, although there will not be a lot of possibilities for direct interaction with onsite participants during the event. By the way, in the frame of the scholarships, we are offering the possibility to cover internet costs for remote attendees. Auregann (talk) 12:42, 13 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Celtic languages or languages in general[edit]

Despite the title, some of the past editions of this conference were about minority languages in general.

Is this one more centered specifically on Celtic languages? Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 11:40, 19 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi Amir, thank you for the question. The answer ended up being longer than I expected, but I hope that's ok since it's an important question.
The balance in the focus of the conference is one that we as an organising team gave a lot of thought to. One of the strengths of the conference has been its inclusiveness, connecting communities from across the globe. It has been inspiring to hear about the Dagbani community’s use of television to reach new communities or the work of Kashmiri Wikimedians training others and invigorating their editors.
2024 is the first time since 2019 that the Celtic Knot has been held in-person. Historically, the in-person conferences have been located in one of the Celtic Nations and with that there has come a natural focus on the host-culture as well as featuring of the Celtic Languages in the programming in addition to other minoritised languages. This year’s location allows us to revisit the work of Wikimedia Community Ireland and the linguistic diversity of the island. We took the opportunity to sharpen the focus on Celtic languages as a thematic approach to the in-person programming and extra-curricular activities, but not to the exclusion of other minority and minoritised languages which will be featured in the programming.
The European geographic focus arises partly from WCI's ongoing work with the WikiWomen Erasmus+ project connecting Basque, Frisian and Irish speakers - the conference will be the results dissemination for this project which will be the sharing of toolkits ready for translation to use with any language Wiki to provide the resources for students, educators and GLAMs to run a Wikipedia course with second level students to introduce Wiki to the classrooms in as many languages as possible. The results of the community survey also factored into this decision to refocus, with a third of the responses being from Ireland and the UK. Considerations are being made with programming submissions on ensuring a diverse range of representation and that, where topics are focused on a single language, the overall takeaway and key learning will be applicable across language communities.
The programme will feature keynote speakers talking about Celtic languages within the context of small language Wikis and also language policy and planning in Digital Spaces, which we hope will be useful for a wide audience. We are also looking forward to community updates in a format used in previous years - it’s always a highlight.
With an in-person event, in considering what kind of support we can offer to attendees, wee decided on offering two options: scholarships for people attending in-person and scholarships for people watching online. We are also in discussions about satellite events for those who will not be able to travel to Ireland to attend in person but still facilitate a social space for those interested in minoritised languages within the Wiki World and we are in discussion about how we can support these events. It is also our plan to host some online sessions ahead of the conference also.
We hope that the conference will appeal to people involved with minority and minoritised language communities, and that in particular this can showcase the work with the Irish language and boost Celtic language communities. Richard Nevell (WMUK) (talk) 08:22, 21 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
