Separate English and Portugese reports

[edit]

User:Oona, user:Ocastro, thanks for your report. Separating the report into specific langugae sections at the top level or making separate page for each language will make these more useful and accessible.--Arjunaraoc (talk) 05:50, 18 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Definitely, Arjunaraoc! Thank you for your input. We're still working on it and will translate into PT what's been written in English and the other way round (translate into English what's been originally written in PT), having 2 blocks of reports.--Oona Castro (talk) 19:01, 19 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

WMF review of the report

[edit]

Thank you for this report. In particular, thank you for being open and forthright in reporting difficulty, tension, and setbacks alongside success.

I'm separating my comments to several subsections below, for ease of discussion. Please respond within each subsection. Asaf Bartov (WMF Grants) talk 06:10, 28 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

The Access to Knowledge Seminar

[edit]

Thanks for the insightful analysis of the perceptual difficulties surrounding this event. Has it (this analysis, or something like it) been shared with the community retrospectively? I.e. is there at least better understanding in hindsight of what was intended and what was hoped for? Asaf Bartov (WMF Grants) talk 06:10, 28 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

Partially yes, this has been shared in the evaluation session. Respondents were also community members and this has been publicly shared. Perhaps it hasn't been made clear we intended to show connections and convergence possibilities, as it was intended to be concretely shown through the day. --Oona Castro (talk) 15:48, 10 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Relicensing materials

[edit]

Could you say a little more about Acao's progress in relicensing the materials? How many resources (and, roughly, pages?) are planned to be relicensed? How many have been, already? Of those, how many are up on Wikisource? What is the gating factor preventing more/faster progress? Asaf Bartov (WMF Grants) talk 06:10, 28 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

Sure. Unfortunatly we didn't manage to go so fast on this process, especially because we didn't have new publication in this meantime, execpt for one, that was the first one to be licensed as CC BY and was put on Wikisources. But we are also working on the relicensing of those collections mentioned. The goal is to have at least the Em Questão collection relicensed by August, with would be more de 500 pages. But there arre also other materials on the way. --Gustavobpaiva (talk) 11:45, 11 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Wiki Loves Earth

[edit]

Following the (approved) reallocation of funds to support the Wiki Loves Earth project instead of the documentation methodology development effort, I would like to see, now that the competition is over, a report to the movement on WLE in Brazil. The structure of a PEG grant report form would be one useful guide to an appropriate format for such a report. If there's still a lot of post-competition activity (e.g. concentrated, as distinct from gradual and unorganized, integration efforts of photos into Wikipedia), this report can be postponed by a couple of weeks. Asaf Bartov (WMF Grants) talk 06:10, 28 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

We have worked on the documentation of the process and learnings and will follow up with a PEG grant report structure as soon as the best collaborations winners are announced. --Oona Castro (talk) 15:51, 10 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
Excellent, thanks. Asaf Bartov (WMF Grants) talk 20:26, 2 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Printed materials (capacity building activity 3)

[edit]

The "end of May" target date is a month behind us. Can you confirm these materials have been printed and are available? Is any deliberate distribution planned? Asaf Bartov (WMF Grants) talk 06:10, 28 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

Actually, a new deadline (july, 15) was required by the designer and the staff member working in that. We can upload the current version, still under revision if necessary. --Oona Castro (talk) 15:54, 10 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
So are the materials now printed and available online? And to my question on any plan to proactively distribute them? Asaf Bartov (WMF Grants) talk 20:35, 2 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
We should discuss this regarding the end of the project, due to managing issues. Those materials were supposed to be ready a while ago so we could use them to foster the education program. We'll probably need additional time to do it and leave the rest to be done by future endeavors. --Oona Castro (talk) 16:18, 14 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

OER Mapping research report (Knowledge Production activity 2)

[edit]

This report mentions a report about the OER mapping will be done in July. Could you now link to it? Asaf Bartov (WMF Grants) talk 21:39, 2 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

It should go under my last review now. I was supposed to have handled that before Wikimania, but as many things happened in the meantime, I'll need to go through that in the next week to release final version of it. We also intend to create a guide with the support of Creative Commons Brazil / Center for Technology and Society to deliver by September. --Oona Castro (talk) 15:40, 14 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
Understood, thanks. Asaf Bartov (WMF Grants) talk 17:50, 14 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

OER tracking tool (Knowledge Production activity 3)

[edit]

Where is this tool being developed? When is it expected to be complete? Who is expected to be using it? Asaf Bartov (WMF Grants) talk 21:39, 2 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Engage professors (Content Production activity 2)

Course (capacity building activity 1)

[edit]

When is that study on the content generated by participants planned?

Of the people listed as having undertaken "a project to work on Wikimedia projects in their professional lives", are you aware of any who have actually done so? A quick edit-count check on those listed shows most have not made more than 10 edits ever, with a few having made up to 50 edits, and one (MCeci) having more than 2000 edits, though that user has been engaged for years now.

(I recognize this was not the only objective of the course.) Asaf Bartov (WMF Grants) talk 21:39, 2 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Those participants will be actually able to deploy their projects from the second semester on. Indeed, the editing rate was low, though the survey we ran showed they now feel more comfortable in understanding and interacting in the Wikimedia projects. Most of them had had no contact at all until then. Gustavobpaiva, can you please add a link to the results of the survey? HAndrade (WMF), can you please add the balance on metrics you raised on the course here? --Oona Castro (talk) 17:51, 14 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
The metrics on content generated by participants of the course can be found here. As Ijon pointed out, MCeci was already a wikiversitian and ended up being the responsible for most of the edits there. As I explain in the linked page, if we compare this course with successful WEP courses and edit-a-thons the number of edits in Wikipedia main domain was low, but I am not quiet sure if this was one of the course goals. HAndrade (talk) 18:56, 15 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. Asaf Bartov (WMF Grants) talk 19:04, 15 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Professor network (support communities building activity 1)

[edit]

Now that the world cup is behind us, what are the prospects of this professor network remaining active, if the catalyst project is not renewed? Asaf Bartov (WMF Grants) talk 21:39, 2 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

We have a mailing list for the Brazil Education Program in which professors are already in contact with each other. This does not mean they have a common agenda at this point yet. There are two universities willing to host an event to gather them altogether. And in two of the universities, campus localized groups have been emerging, more precisely in Faculdade de Comunicação Social Casper Libero and in the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFGRS), where one may find at least three professors running activities in Wikimedia projects. We've been encouraging them to create Wikimedia aligned professors groups in order to encourage and help other professors to start new activities. We've also encourage them a few times to create a national professors independent group, but no professor took the lead. We will need to clearly communicate to all professors about the end of the program (most of them are already fairly aware of this possibility, but haven't been officially communicated but one of them) and refer them to the Brazilian user group. --Oona Castro (talk) 15:37, 14 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Developer network (support communities building activity 3)

[edit]

Please provide links to the translated tutorials. Also, could you give examples of community members supported in developing their own tools? Could you point to outcomes of the "wikigames" idea? Is it still developed? Asaf Bartov (WMF Grants) talk 21:39, 2 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

With the creation of a "data portal" in the Portuguese Wikipedia, gathering information that had been previously produced and translated, new materials were to be translated in there. For some months, there also used to be Friday's meetings in IRC where lots of collaboration took place in the improvement of tools. Brazilian community tools have been published together with the ones we created on wmflabs.--Oona Castro (talk) 16:13, 14 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
HAndrade (WMF), can you please add here too?--Oona Castro (talk) 16:13, 14 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
We have been using the IRC a lot to coordinate the action of the ptwikis tool labs project. I talk a lot with and help specially danilo, OTAVIO and Turicas. The first one has being the pt community lead developer of the tools found at ptwikis, the second is running queries on community behavior and is one of the "anti-vandalism bot" creators and the third is a data hacker, that is creating a tool to analyze anon edits based on the IP origin and is also working on the integration of Wikidata with Brasil.IO, an API of Brazil's open data.
About the "wikigames": we talked a lot about it at IRC and created a page for the project. The first idea is to create a game for users to correct links to disambiguation pages. I thought this could be a good project for the catalyst program to be engaged in its next phase. But, since the program is not going be on anymore, I don't think I'll join efforts to this project in the following weeks. HAndrade (talk) 19:46, 15 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thank you!
(So, are there no translated tutorials? I'm not sure if the comment about IRC was by way of answer to my request for links at the top of this section.) Asaf Bartov (WMF Grants) talk 19:59, 15 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Centralized program goal tracker (experiments activity 1)

[edit]

What was the obstacle preventing the creation of such a program goal tracker? I am particularly surprised since the team includes a full time developer. Asaf Bartov (WMF Grants) talk 22:13, 2 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Anti-vandalism tools (experiments activity 3)

[edit]

Where can one read a description of what this bot is supposed to do? (I couldn't quite find it on the hackathon page linked.) Is there community approval to run this bot, once it's ready? Where can one see these localizations being developed? (could it be the Snuggle localization was last updated more than a year ago?) Likewise, I'm not seeing evidence of the work done on STiki after August 2013. Asaf Bartov (WMF Grants) talk 22:13, 2 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Snuggle wasn't approved or required, but wasn't also totally refused. At some point we decided Snuggle was among things that we could do without prior approval, leaving it for the community to decide in the future whether to use it or not.
Hi HAndrade (WMF), can you please help us better answer Asaf's questions on experiments in this page?--Oona Castro (talk) 16:06, 14 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
About the bot: I just read again the hackathon page and the text isn't really easy to understand for the ones that wasn't there. The ideia behind this bot is that it should edits only pages out of the main domain with some useful information on filters behavior and on potential vandals. This pages could be watched by the vadalism-fighters and they would have the human decision to act or not. Since this bot will be only creating reports, I don't think we will have any problems to approve it. At the hackathon we created the queries that will gather the data for the reports, and now we just have to put in on pywikibot to have the bot ready to run. (I should create a project page for this bot).
About Snuggle: The software had some changes and the old Portuguese test version went down. I talked to Aaron at Wikimania about this changes and I'll set up a new instance of Snuggle for ptwiki at tool labs (and I have to update the ptwiki page about it).
About STiki: I am in contact with Andrew by email and he is helping me to create a version for ptwiki (and I also have to update the ptwiki page about it). HAndrade (talk) 19:21, 15 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. When you have a moment, could you document for the record where an interested volunteer might keep up with these efforts? (source repositories, issue trackers, etc.) Asaf Bartov (WMF Grants) talk 19:41, 15 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

community support (experiments activity 4)

[edit]

What was the obstacle to creating that "automated way to generate geolocalized queries on the projects"?

Please provide links to the listed tools. Asaf Bartov (WMF Grants) talk 22:13, 2 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

The obstacle is assuring user privacy. When working with geolocalized data on registered users we need to be sure that no one will be trackable. Researches working directly on the data can double check it before making then public, but if we are using an automated process the software must be able to cover all the possibilities to protect the users. With that in mind, we noticed that a tool that would allow anyone to apply filters and have geolocated results could expose users if a small or focused cohort is used. We couldn't figure out a solution for this issue.
About the links, I'll add then to the project page. HAndrade (talk) 20:03, 15 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
I see. Thanks. Asaf Bartov (WMF Grants) talk 20:06, 15 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Education and expert outreach

[edit]

Could you clarify if, in the context of outreach to non-university institutions with educational content (6th bullet point), any concrete projects were developed/begun? Asaf Bartov (WMF Grants) talk 22:13, 2 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

With regards to Embrapa (the agriculture Brazilian public company), our efforts were not successful. They were pretty interested in the beginning, but when information that the license would allow commercial use got to the top level directory, they refrained.
With reference to the Ministry of Health, there is interest in encouraging their professionals to help Wikipedia improve, and we have designed the bot to allow inviting more contributors to the Wikiproject on Health affairs. We have also invited two prominent volunteers to attend Ministry of Health events so they could build contacts. Some of the most active editors in the project just asked for more time to get the project more structured so they can better receive newcomers.
With relation to Serpro (the Data Processing company), which have agreed to embed content into their distance courses on technology and digital inclusion, we're dependent on the outreach material to be finalized so we can hand it in to Serpro so they may get it customized. --Oona Castro (talk) 16:03, 14 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. Sturm, can you provide an update about the availability of those materials? Asaf Bartov (WMF Grants) talk 20:05, 15 August 2014 (UTC)Reply

Summary and status

[edit]

Thank you for this detailed report, and for the extra effort in providing it in English, not just to make it easier for us, but to allow maximal exposure and learning from it by the movement.

This concludes WMF's review of the report, with the above pending questions. Once satisfactory answers are provided above, the report will be formally accepted. Asaf Bartov (WMF Grants) talk 22:13, 2 August 2014 (UTC)Reply
