Where is the vote gadget?

Initially posted on talk page of @DVrandecic (WMF):

On Abstract Wikipedia/Wiki of functions naming contest/Names, I see that you have tested the use the "vote gadget" by pressing the "Vote now!" button. However I do't see any effect of this button on Chrome desktop. The button does nothing.

Where is the "vote gadget" ? I don't even see it in the gadgets of my preferences. Is it something you are still testing ?

Note: I have made the page translatable (but not the subpage containing votes where these votes should be added by the gadget, or edited manually. Thanks. verdy_p (talk) 11:00, 22 October 2020 (UTC)

@Verdy p: Translation details for that are at MediaWiki_talk:Gadget-AbstractWikipediaDraggableVoting. I ran out of time/energy last night to make sure that I had covered everything, but I have now sent details to the mailing list.

Sidenote: Unfortunately the scope=col code broke the gadget so we had to undo that addition.

The gadget will be enabled when the voting starts.

Thats "scope=col" (meant for accessibility) was not supposed to break, and even without it, I never saw the gadget in action. So most probably you are still testing this gadget before enabling in on the wiki. I don't know why this accessibilty attribute would break your early javascript (this was unexpected, but that javascript should not break on such attribute, given it will just collect the column data content in the table, and reordering rows in the table should not depend on individual cells of each row.

Also do you depend on the "th" vs. "td" element type, because you reverted it as well ?

Note that the effective list of votes in the target page where they will be posted, is not warrantied to be using only the column numbers (notably mobile users or all those that won't be able to use the gadget with the button, still not working at all today even on a desktop) but that will just post a list of preferences (using numbers 1 to 6 can be very confusive for them as there's nothing in the edited target page showing the mapping and review/correct their own votes easily.

So this gadget is probably not very suited for votes, unless it is posting its data in a formal datatable instead of a page in wiki format; there are content models other than Mediawiki pages, that should better be used for searching, storing, sorting tabular data, including the formats used by Wikibase, or otherwise any "flat" but parsable file format based on CSV, JSON, XML, RDF...)

@Verdy p: The gadget is in your gadgets section, called "AbstractWikipediaDraggableVoting". It will be made default when voting is live. No, I looked in my preferences, and the gadget is nowhere. I already searched there when I posted the request above and it was not there (and still not today). The page should also say that this possibility requires the gadaget to be enabled (but many users have all gadgets disabled in their preferences, including on desktop). So you'll still need a way for them to post their voters by manual editing in the target page (which is still not easy because there's no clear mapping of the numbers 1 to 6 you apparently want to post with the gadget).

Note that now the gadget is visible in preferences (but not enabled by default and a few hours before when I posted, it was not even listed there, even after forcing a refresh of the page).

So I could not expect that editing the page would break the gadget that was NOT available at all at that time (the button effectively had NO effect, and nothing was visible for the "onclick" event handler in the javascript console, or in ANY javbascript loaded from the webpage, and there was NO error at all related to a missing script; it was simply not there at all). verdy_p (talk) 19:40, 22 October 2020 (UTC)

Please no offense, I wanted to help like I did for many pages on this project. As you said there's no emergency, but the mergency cannot be handled at end in the last hours. We can advance together so that minor things can be tweaked and tested.

You said it was there, but it was NOT when I searched for "vote" in the gadget preferences. That's exactly why I asked to DVrandecic (WMF) which apaprently used this gadget adn I could not find it. I did not made this silently and contacted the right person as he was testing it (according to the edit diff submitted onto the votes page. You just replied late after my contact to DVrandecic on his talk page (in a post I did correctly but then you decided to remove it to place it here, so he was possibly not informed). That's why I readded the ping at top of this page (you forgot to include him). Now you are saying in a revert comment on his talk page (which was my direct post to him) that I "forked the discussion", this is not very fair, because you forked it yourself. When I posted the initial question (now above), I did not see you anywhere on these recent changes. verdy_p (talk) 01:36, 23 October 2020 (UTC)

Start Voting

Unclear UI

There are various UI issues here.

• If the user clicks the Start Voting button after scrolling down so that the button is at the top of the browser view, it looks like nothing happens -- all of the voting UI stuff appears above this button, and if "above the button" is outside view, it is invisible to the user.

I clicked several times out of an impression that nothing happened, until I noticed that the left-hand sidebar was pushed upward each time I clicked the button. By then, I had six or seven "submit your vote" sections, and I had to reload the page to reset it.

• The Submit your vote section has a heading, Please reorder the options below in your order of preference.. But it doesn't explain how the ordering works: should I put my first choice to the left, or to the right?

I'm assuming my first choice should go to the left -- but this is only an assumption, and I'm not sure if I'm correct.

• It doesn't look like there's any place to comment on the names themselves.

Should any such comments be entered here on this Talk page? It's not clear.

@Eirikr: Thanks for the feedback.

1) I'll ask the gadget dev if we can fix this to force a scroll-to-top.

2) Your assumption is correct. The difficulty is that this tool is also adapted to work for Right-to-left (RTL) languages, so "first" choice is "left" in LTR languages and "right" in RTL languages. And on top of that, an editor could arrive here from a link directly to the translated page (e.g. Abstract Wikipedia/Wiki of functions naming contest/Names/ar) but could have their language-preferences for this wiki set to English or another LTR language (or vice-versa), so we can't predict whether the instructions should match the content-text or the interface-text.

3) Discussion about each of the proposed names primarily took place during Round 1. New comments could probably best be placed in the Round 1 pages that are linked from the table, in order to keep everything together. Or here, if you'd prefer.

unclear procedure

The procedure for people to vote seems unclear for the second round, there is few votes and some people seems to have voted in november in the section of the first vote count on the proposition subpage TomT0m (talk) 09:27, 6 November 2020 (UTC)

@TomT0m: Hi, yes I am now contacting the people who voted in the wrong place. We are using the gadget/procedure that was previously used at the mw:Project:Proposal for changing logo of MediaWiki, 2020/Round 2, in the hopes that it would make it easier for people to provide a clear ranked-vote for each of the proposals, in addition to making it relatively easy for both longterm editors and new editors to participate. There are ~150 votes at the moment so I think it is progressing ok, but please do spread the encouragement to wherever you think it will help. (So far, we've announced it via: project talkpage, massmessage to global village-pumps, a few mailing-lists, IRC/Telegram, twitter, and possibly others I'm forgetting). Thanks. Note about "Wikifusion" option

The term "fusion" has very difference associative field in various languages. This may be relevance in English, but will ber fully unclear in Russian, for example. This is difficult branding for international project.--Kaganer (talk) 16:31, 6 November 2020 (UTC)
