Strategy/Wikimedia movement/2018-20/Updates/June 2019

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Fellow Wikimedians,

Our nine working groups are neck-deep in gathering information that enriches their work toward recommendations. They are starting to seek advice and perspectives from within and outside of the movement, and work hard to develop changes to our movement structures.

This is the last week to send us your applications for a strategy salon grant; if you’re interested in running a small, strategy-focused event with your affiliate’s community, apply for a grant by May 31. We are again hosting a space at Wikimania this year; if you want to talk movement strategy at the event, submit your proposal (details below). Community conversations are running from now through September. Join in and share your thoughts on how to build our future.

Send us your strategy salon grant applications by May 31

The deadline to submit an application for a strategy salon grant is just around the corner. If you would like to dive deep into the movement strategy with your affiliate’s community, you can apply for an in-person event grant of between $500 and $1500 by May 31. Send in your application by Friday! Kelsi will host an office hours this Wednesday, May 29 at 12:00 UTC on Zoom where you can ask all your last-minute questions. Anything you need to know about strategy salon application grants is on Meta.

Come and discuss the movement strategy at Wikimania

The movement strategy will be at Wikimania! The core team will host a space during the event. Our main activities will focus on engagement with working groups and the broader community on the first outline of recommendations for change. But we also want to hear from you. If you have an idea for a session or discussion about our future, please send us your session proposal. We are seeking interactive formats about building the future of Wikimedia; the free knowledge ecosystem now and in the future; Wikimedia‘s strategic direction and how we advance here; and creating change through collaboration. The deadline to submit is June 1.

Share your thoughts on the community conversations report March/April

We are currently working on the community conversations report for May, which offers an overview of all the conversations that are happening worldwide about our future. We’d like to know what you would like to see and read about in these reports. Have a look at our report from March/April on Meta and let us know what you think about the content and the format. Does it capture the conversations well? Are there views or insights that you feel are missing? You can share your input directly on Meta or via your own language’s community forums (for Hindi, Arabic, Mandarin, German, Portuguese, and Spanish).

Building on the movement strategy conversations at the Wikimedia Summit

This year’s Wikimedia Summit was a key forum for movement strategy. It enabled affiliates to connect directly with working groups. Working groups have been using the insights gained from discussions during the event to help guide their work. The Wikimedia Summit 2019 report offers a detailed overview of this that you can use to help take these discussions forward during community conversations.

If you’d prefer to hear rather than read about the movement strategy discussions at the Wikimedia Summit, check out the video of April’s monthly activities meeting. Tanveer Hasan from our Information and Knowledge management team outlines the central points and outcomes for each of the working groups from the event. A big thank you to the Summit team for all their hard work in making the strategy discussions happen.

If you have any questions or would like to connect about the movement strategy, please feel free to contact me and my team.

Best wishes,

Nicole
