Plan
[edit]Activities
[edit]Educaton
[edit]The activities that we plan to carry out as part of or educational programme include extending collaborations with educational institutions with the aim of organising groups of students that will add content on the Wikimedia projects as well as holding seminars and giving lectures in public on topics related to the Wikimedia movement.
The team working on the educational programme have overachieved the goals set for the year that passed. Based on our experience so far, we plan to keep up our collaboration with the educational institutions involved in our programme over the last couple of years and achieve a commensurate expansion of the volume of activities relative to the human resources we have.
Our main efforts will be focused on keeping up with the successful activities in the Josip Broz – Tito Grammar School and the Faculty of Economics at Ss. Cyril and Methodius University of Skopje. We also plan to hold lectures on editing Wikipedia in other educational institutions, such as the Faculty of Natural Sciences (departments of Chemistry, Physics and Biology), Faculty of History, Faculty of Philology (department of English language and literature), Orce Nikolov Grammar School, Georgi Dimitrov Grammar School and the Construction School Centre in Skopje.
Besides collaborating with educational institutions on the creation of new content in various topics, we also intend to educate the public about the topics related to the Wikimedia movement such as free knowledge and free culture through seminars and lectures. These activities are intended to be short and engaging, full of facts about the movement and recent cool activities. The main goal is to inspire the attendants to join the community and contribute to the movement's activities.
Community
[edit]EDITING CHALLENGES
The editing challenges primarily aim to increase the content quality on the Wikimedia project and to improve the representation of given topics. To that extent, the editing challenges that we plan to conduct in the following year will include edit-a-thons, editing contests, editing days and editing weekends.
Following the successful transition from a community-oriented events for experienced towards community-oriented events for new editors, we will continue to hold edit-a-thons in collaborations with groups interested to create content on the Wikimedia projects. This work model has the potential of increasing the number of newly registered users and reaches out to new undiscovered groups of people.
The editing contests have drastically improved the coverage of underrepresented topics and have also led to re-activating of users who have not been active for a pretty long time. Because the goal of the editing contests focus on adding quality content, they mostly focus on engaging the community of experienced users, yet the participation of newly registered users is also welcome. One of the editing contests that we will conduct in the following year is the Wikimedia CEE Spring 2017, jointly with the affiliates from the other countries of the Central and Eastern Europe.
The positive evaluation of our editing days as a project that encorages participation of commnity members in writing articles on a pre-selected underrepresented topic during a 24-hour period was convincing enough to include the project anew for the next year. We have also concluded that the editing days fit quite well on holidays and other commemorating days and plan to use it as a rationale for their determining.
Encouraged by the positive results from the concept of the editing days, our plan is to start conducting editing weekends that will differ in that the writing of articles on a pre-selected underrepresented topic will last for a 48-hour period on a pre-determined weekend.
COMMUNITY SUPPORT
The relation between the Wikimedia affiliate and the community as a key for healthy development of the movement in the following year will be enhanced through working equally on extending support for organising Photohunts for the existing community, growing the community through the holding of a Wiki camp and building up the community through frequent gatherings and meet-ups as well as increased participation in international events and conferences.
The photohunts, which have incidentally been envisaged as a project in 2016 to be carried out from the unspecified funds of the annual budget, are certainly a nice example of a successful low-budget project with high cost-effectiveness. Despite the fact it helps the community members get financial support for their own hunt for images, the project also reward special right to the community rather than the regulatory bodies of the affiliate to make the final decision on delivering the support.
The concept of holding a Wiki camp was accepted as a successful story that yielded positive results in other countries from Central and Eastern Europe. Our idea is to gather a group of about a dozen of young people, having been previously selected based on their answers in a survey, that will be brought to a mountainous village to learn about the editing and add content to the Wikimedia projects, increase their knowledge about the movement and get involved in the work done by the community.
Having recorded sharp decrease in the frequency of community gatherings and meet-ups, with the Wikipedia Day celebrations as the only formal events, our aim will be to build up the community by reinstating the regular community meet-ups not only to discuss issues on the Wikimedia projects but also as a way for socialising of the community members. The commemoration of the Wikipedia Day will also have to add on the community build-up at the beginning of the next year.
In the upcoming year, we plan to send three representatives (including a staff member) at the Wikimedia Conference 2017, two representatives at the Wikimedia CEE Meeting 2017, to award two scholarships for participation in Wikimania 2017 and to have participants at regional conferences (e.g. WikiLive in Belgrade, OSCAL in Tirana).
EXPEDITIONS
The positive outcome of the expeditionary projects and their enormous impact on the on-site research capabilities over the last two years have led to continuing the project with increased pace in the following year. Our plans for 2017 encompass having seven generic Wikiexpeditions (including a cross-border expedition), four Geoexpeditions, two Veloexpeditions and two Agroexpeditions, totalling to 15 expeditions overall.
The idea about organising a cross-border Wikiexpedition in Northern Greece (Aegean Macedonia) has become a topic of discussion after having completed a successful edit-a-thon and a successful editing contest on a topic about villages in Aegean Macedonia, which have both resulted in adding substantial content to the Macedonian Wikipedia and have helped identify the lack of images from the villages, monumental buildings and landscapes in Aegean Macedonia, especially in the region north of Thessaloniki. Following the endorsement received from several community members in Greece, we think that this expedition will have two-fold positive impact, as it allows us to take the necessary images for the use in the articles and share the practice of organising successful expeditions with the colleagues in Greece.
The positive outcome of the two Geoexpeditions in 2016 have led to the planning of two additional for the year to come. Unlike the coverage primarily of mountain peaks and leaks, the scope of the systematic coverage of specific geographical features in 2017 will be larger in including caves and water springs.
The goal of this project is to visit two regions adjacent to the Skopje region in Macedonia with bicycles (hence the 'velo' in the name) and camping equipment. We will camp around villages, visiting them with the bikes and make photographs of them, their monuments and surrounding landscapes, recording their heritage, churches, places of interest and other riches.
The introduction of the Agroexpeditions presents a further development of the expeditions concept that arose from the immensity of agricultural land and the variety of agricultural production in the country. Our aim is to visit two different regions to research agriculture, that is farming crops and breeding livestock as well as agricultural processing such as plowing, sowing and harvest together with tools and mechanisation.

[edit]CULTURAL HERITAGE
The documentation of the cultural heritage of Macedonia will be done through various thematic projects, with some of them proceeding the positive practices of 2016. In particular, our plans for the following year is to pay attention on the traditional spirits through the WikiWine and WikiRakija projects as well as on the traditional music and dance through the Macedonian composers and Macedonian folk dances projects.
Following the promising start and the relative ease of visiting vineyards and wineries, the WikiWine project is included anew for 2017 with the aim of providing quality content on new sorts of grapes and wines. In the same way, we also plan to start with the WikiRakija project that aims at documenting the production of the country’s traditional spirit called ‘rakija’ (a fruit brandy produced of grapes).
The Macedonian composers project has evolved from our collaboration with the Macedonian academy of sciences and arts (MANU), where our Wikipedian in residence (WIR) negotiated on obtaining many multimedia files of famous Macedonian composers from the 1960s and 1970s that will be released under free licence and uploaded on Wikimedia Commons for further use in Wikipedia articles. Moreover, the project could proceed with a second part where Wikipedia articles dedicated to specific works (e.g. opera, ballet, song) could be used as QR-pedia codes on the programme leaflets and tickets in the institutions where they are regularly or occasionally performed.
The Macedonian folk dances project has the goal of releasing images and multimedia files of traditional Macedonian dancers performing various traditional dances under free licence that will be uploaded on Wikimedia Commons for further use in Wikipedia articles. The project will follow with creating and improving content about the dances on the Wikimedia projects.
WIKI LOVES CONTESTS
The value added from the Wiki loves contests organised in Macedonia during the 2013-2015 period has gradually decreased on a contest-by-contest basis because of the increased uploads of abundant images from subjects that have already been well represented on Wikimedia Commons and the very low rates of images used in Wikipedia articles from the contests.
However, after identifying the necessities of having images, in particular, from monuments and dishes, we decided to re-introduce Wiki Loves Monuments and Wiki Loves Food in 2017. We have also come up with straightforward solutions for the aforementioned problems. First, we plan to refresh the monument lists of monuments that already have relatively high number of images uploaded. Second, we plan to hold edit-a-thons with the aim of increasing the usage of images in Wikipedia articles.
WIKIPEDIAN IN RESIDENCE
For the upcoming year we plan to extend the term of our Wikipedian in residence at MANU. Considering the significant results achieved so far, Shared Knowledge and MANU are both very satisfied of the work done by the Wikipedian in residence and there is interest from both sides to extend the cooperation that covers not just the library but all other departments and research centres.
Besides negotiating on the release of content under free licence that will be uploaded on Wikimedia Commons and subsequently used in Wikipedia articles, the Wikipedian in residence will also have to take an active role in providing the community members with materials on various topics and to support the execution of our other activities.
Research
[edit]RESEARCH
The main goal of the research programme is to deduce conclusions from the research activities performed in specific areas of interest that will have to support the process of planning of the future projects and give direction to the overtaking of measures to respond to the identified concerns.
The research activities will include surveying of the community members with the goal of providing information about the demographic structure of the community that will be helpful in setting the goals for our future projects. Professionals to be worked with are Rating Agency (see official web site). The activities will be carried out in the following phases:
- Phase 1 - researching existing data, to be used for pre-designing the questionnaire (volunteer activity);
- Phase 2 - questionnaire design and suggestions for questions (professional engagement);
- Phase 3 - collecting data by telephone calls (50% professional + 50% volunteer engagement); and
- Phase 4 - data analysis with reports and options: narrative report or presentation with conclusions (professional engagement).
The goal of this project will be to gain an insight into the public opinion in Macedonia about Wikipedia. We want to learn what they perceive as our pros and cons, which will inform our decisions. The research results will be made available in Macedonian and English.
