Research talk:The Role of Wikipedia Mentorship Programs in the Newcomer Experience
Add topicA few final details before commencing interviews
[edit]I've received a query from one of the authors as to whether they can proceed with the interview portion of the study. Since this research is being conducted as part of a WMF grant-funded project, I'm going to review this project while wearing my "work" hat rather than my RCOMM hat. So many hats! Anyway...
This looks solid to me so far. A few requests before I give the green light. Authors, could you post...
- a version of your interview protocol on a subpage of your proposal page, and then include the link somewhere?
- some of the other relevant details from your IRB form, such as expected # of interview participants, your recruitment method, and how you will protect the identities of interviewees who wish to remain anonymous?
Once you'e done that and let me know, I think you'll be ready to roll. Please ping me again when you're gearing up to deploy surveys, and have provided the same kind of info about that portion of the study. And let me know if you have any questions! Response to details needed
[edit]Thank you for the feedback. Responses below:
- A link to interview protocol can be found here
- For the background research, we would like to interview at least 18 Wikipedians; three mentors and learners from AfC, TWA, and Teahouse.
- To preserve the anonymity, names of the respondents will be changed in the data gathering process and analysis of the findings. Other potential identifiers, including specific articles that respondents have worked on, will be altered.

- Thanks Gabrielm199. This all sounds appropriate. Go forth and interview. Let me know if you need anything, and keep an eye on this page in case I or anyone else has questions or feedback. Best, Jmorgan (WMF) (talk) 16:29, 21 August 2014 (UTC)
- @Gabrielm199 and Jmorgan (WMF):: Actually, we can't gather mentors from TWA, because there this help space does not have human mentors, so we may consider recruiting elsewhere like from (former?) mentors of Adopt-a-user. I JethroBT (talk) 22:09, 26 August 2014 (UTC)
- Sounds like a good idea to me! Cheers, Jmorgan (WMF) (talk) 02:45, 27 August 2014 (UTC)
