Well, let me be the first to say "keep up the good work" :) on the wiki. --Piotrus 21:43, 17 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Very good initiative. Is there any deadline to achieve this? IntraLucide 08:37, 18 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thanks folks, we will start implementing this plan after the next meeting of the Research Committee, which will take place tomorrow. --DarTar 18:18, 18 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
It’s fantastic that you are heading up this overhaul; it is needed. I just wanted to add a couple more considerations. Given that the “Summer of Research” and the Global Education Program are starting up, there will probably be more researchers who are not familiar with Wikipedia structure and norms. It would be helpful for them to have some introductory information and charts. (Images like updated and accurate versions of this database chart will help orient new researchers.) For them it will be key to have the information compiled and organized in a easily digestible format. As we all know, there are several elements that make researching in Wikipedia complicated, it might be nice to break it down for newcomers. It would be helpful researchers new to Wikipedia if the portal provides the following services and information:
  • Distinguish between the sites and their purposes: Wikipedia, Wikimedia, Wikiversity, Meta, Strategy, Media...
  • Give an overview of Wikipedia community culture.
  • Describe what data are currently available and provide examples of different available data types, ie. contribution histories, article bytes, page views.
    • Maybe have an FAQ of what meta research is going on to improve data quality and why certain information is not available or easily accessible.
  • Explain how to get data and explain the access limits (like who has access to the toolserver and how to get it.)
  • Describe the available data tools or why it is not possible to have all them collected or accessible to all
  • Link to a collection of available data sources
  • Link to planned, current, and past project and results
  • Define WMF policies with regards to outside researchers, as Global Education expands more academics and researchers will approach WMF with proposals or requests.
    • What if any resources will WMF provide to PhD candidates and other reserachers who have requirements from their affiliate institutions?
    • IRB recommendations and template forms
    • who is the point of contact at WMF for these requests
    • Explain what projects are supported by WMF and what those levels of support are
  • Provide links to research-L and other avenues to work with the established Wikipedia research community
  • Link to a collection of freely available pdfs of previously published Wikipedia research
