This question set is among the high level research priorities for the Wikimedia Summer of Research 2011. The full list is here, and this is categorized as "RQ4".
Questions[edit]
(RQ4.1) How many new or experienced editors to a single particular language of Wikipedia come from different geographic locales? Question has generally been ruled out, since only way to acquire this data is via polling/surveys which are naturally incomplete. Even with access to private data through the Foundation, historical IP data is not retained past 90 days.
(RQ4.2) How successful are editors who self-identify as being from particular locales at mentoring - or at least not biting - new editors? Per above.
(RQ4.3) How much bilingual/cross-wiki activity is there among active registered editors? [1]
