Research:100 edits mark of 50 most active Indonesian Wikipedia users

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

100 edits mark is a survey held in 2014 by Wiki-ID community. The purpose of this survey is to understand the contribution pattern of Wikipedians, especially in Indonesia. We found out that only 16% of Indonesian Wikipedia most active contributors (as of February 2014) hit their 100 edits mark on the first month after they signed up to Wikipedia. Some of them don't even reach 100 edits on their first year.

Population of the survey

The population of this survey is 50 most active Indonesian Wikipedia users as of February 2014. Out of 50, we took 19 users that matched these criteria as samples:

  • Opted in to Cyberpower678's User Analysis Tool
  • Signed up after Indonesian Wikipedia (Wikipedia bahasa Indonesia) reached 10.000 articles

Then, using Cyberpower678's User Analysis Tool, we collected the samples' 12 first months contributions data. We laid the data on a spreadsheet, then calculate the cumulative contributions of the samples to find out when were most samples hit their 100 edits mark.

Result, conclusion, and practical implications

[edit]

From the analysis, we found out that only 16% of Indonesian Wikipedia most active contributors (as of February 2014) hit their 100 edits mark on the first month after they signed up to Wikipedia. Some of them don't even reach 100 edits on their first year. 100 edit mark of Indonesian Wikipedia most active users - Monthly Contributions

100 edit mark of Indonesian Wikipedia most active users - Cumulative Contributions

With this result, we conclude that most of our most active users gave significant contributions not hours, not days, but months after their first contact with the community. This survey implies that it's important to keep following up participants of Wikimedia event even months after their first contact with the community, for example by contacting onwiki or invite them to another event.
