Requests for new languages/Wikipedia Western Balochi

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki
submitted verification final decision
Discuss the creation of this language project on this page. Votes will be ignored when judging the proposal. Please provide arguments or reasons and be prepared to defend them (see the Language proposal policy).

The language committee needs to verify the language is eligible to be approved.

  • Check that the project does not already exist (see list).
  • Obtain an ISO 639 code
  • Ensure the requested language is sufficiently unique that it could not exist on a more general wiki.
  • Ensure that there are a sufficient number of native editors of that language to merit an edition in that language.
  • The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics, recent changes). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
  • The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
  • The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:
What Value Example / Explanation
Proposal
Language code bgn (SILGlottolog) A valid ISO 639-1 or 639-3 language code, like "fr", "de", "nso", ...
Language name Western Baluchi Language name in English
Language name روچ کپتین بلوچی Language name in your language. This will appear in the language list on Special:Preferences, in the interwiki sidebar on other wikis, ...
Language Wikidata item Q12645561 - item has currently the following values:
Item about the language at Wikidata. It would normally include the Wikimedia language code, name of the language, etc. Please complete at Wikidata if needed.
Directionality RTL Is the language written from left to right (LTR) or from right to left (RTL)?
Links Links to previous requests, or references to external websites or documents.

Settings
Project name ویکی‌پیڈیا "Wikipedia" in your language
Project namespace ویکی‌پیڈیا usually the same as the project name
Project talk namespace ویکی‌پیڈیا حبر و گپ "Wikipedia talk" (the discussion namespace of the project namespace)
Enable uploads yes Default is "no". Preferably, files should be uploaded to Commons.
If you want, you can enable local file uploading, either by any user ("yes") or by administrators only ("admin").
Notes: (1) This setting can be changed afterwards. The setting can only be "yes" or "admin" at approval if the test creates an Exemption Doctrine Policy (EDP) first. (2) Files on Commons can be used on all Wikis. (3) Uploading fair-use images is not allowed on Commons (more info). (4) Localisation to your language may be insufficient on Commons.
Optional settings
Project logo File:Wikipedia-logo-v2-bgn.svg This needs to be an SVG image (instructions for logo creation).
Default project timezone Asia/Karachi "Continent/City", e.g. "Europe/Brussels" or "America/Mexico City" (see list of valid timezones)
Additional namespaces For example, a Wikisource would need "Page", "Page talk", "Index", "Index talk", "Author", "Author talk".
Additional settings Anything else that should be set
Once settings are finalized, a committee member will submit a Phabricator task requesting creation of the wiki. (This will include everything automatically, except the additional namespaces/settings.) After the task is created, it should be linked to in a comment under "final decision" above.

Difference

[edit]

What is the difference between Southern Baluchi, Western Baluchi and Baluchi? There is another voting of new Wiki for Southern Baluchi at this link.Ameen Akbar (talk) 14:50, 19 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

There's only minor differences in the various dialects of Balochi language. I recommend there should be only one Standard Balochi Language Wikipedia (bal). That will prevent the contributions and community from dividing and work of contributors will concentrated to only one project.--Irfan Arshad (talk) 03:51, 20 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Arguments against

[edit]
  1. Oppose : I don't think each dialect should have a project of its own. There should be a single Baluchi Wikipedia for all these dialects at bal.wikipedia.org. I have read that there are only minimal differences so the community should discuss what should be the literary version of the language.--Satdeep Gill (talk) 07:11, 24 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
To against your oppose rationale, see User_talk:Satdeep_Gill/Archive_1#RFL questions. Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 03:18, 24 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  2. Oppose I did not notice earlier that there is another request for another dialect of Balochi. Therefore, I oppose it and support single Balochi Wikipedia. Samee (talk) 05:09, 26 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  3. Oppose Per Satdeep Gill's argument. We already have lots of similar issues for existing Wikipedia languages related to Iran. For example azb is a dialect of az not another language Amir (talk) 20:51, 16 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  4. Oppose Per Satdeep Gill's and Ozeyr's argument in this page. I support "Unified" Balochi Wikipedia. ≈ MS Sakib  «TalK» 10:39, 26 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@MS Sakib Unified what? There are several differents between Eastern, Western and Southern Balochis. Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 13:13, 4 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Why we want balochi language wikipedia?
