Proposal summary
Please read the handbook for requesters for help using this template correctly.

This page should be opened because of the importance of the picard language in North of France.

Arguments in favour

  • There are at least 500.000 speakers of Picard, without counting speakers from Belgium (French Wikipedia on Picard)
  • The particularity of culture in North of France is as differenciated from French as those in Alsace, Basque country or Britain.
  • Successful movies (Bienvenue chez les Ch'tis) have been made in this language.
  • This language has been a literary language in this area for hundreds if not thousands of years. There are several hundred thousand speakers in a first world country. I can forsee nothing but success for this unique language. I think it will go the way of Flemish, Walloon or Lower Sobian, hazah!Qrc2006 18:09, 10 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • - 1) Picard is a language spoken by a lot of people in the north-west of France and in Wallonia (Belgium) - 2) you have books, theatres, songs in picard - 3) you have researchers working on picard in French universities and universities in Belgium but also in universities of England ( London Metropolitan University ), Canada or USA ( University of Indiana )... --- > so it is necessary to open a pcd wikipedia! --Geoleplubo 01:20, 26 March 2009 (UTC) Geoleplubo[reply]

Arguments against

  • Picard is clearly identified as a dialect of French language (Picard is theoretically spoken less than 70 km from Paris, birthplace of French language). There is almost no relationship between medieval Picard (which is the medieval French used by medieval writers such as Adam de la Halle or Jean Froissard, considered to have been French writer) and modern Picard dialect.

Modern Picard speakers cannot read medieval Picard and French speakers do understand most of what is said in Picard. Picard is a local, dialectal and popular form of French language with some specific features such as a non palatilization of Cs (Chien, french for dog, is quien in picard).

In its orthography, Picard uses French norms combined with many apostrophies replacing French vowels that Picard speakers do not pronounce. I would like to remind that the movie mentioned above has been made for a French speaking public witout beeing neither translated nor subtitled.

Creating a wikipedia in Picard would justify the creation other wikipedia in Valenciano (aside from the Catalan), Auvernhat (aside from Occitan), Champenois (aside from French and Picard) and Haitian, Martiniquais and Guadeloupean creole separatly.

Lembeye

The difference is that Picard is more different from French than Auvergnat is from other dialects of Occitan. Picard is not a dialect of standart French. But the most important thing would be that you can write in Auvergnat in the Occitan Wikipedia. Catalan Wikipedia is opened to all dialects with a developed policy on their use according to the subject. But Picard, Champenois, Walloon, or any other oïl language, aside from French, are not allowed in standart French Wikipedia. That's why a Picard Wikipedia should exist if speakers want to.

  • answer to Lembeye:
- 1) Lembeye give the reference Picard where picard is clearly identified as a language (and not a dialect of French language as written...)
- 2) Lembeye write: In its orthography, Picard uses French norms combined with many apostrophies replacing French vowels that Picard speakers do not pronounce. Now in picard, we use the Feller-Carton writing method (as the Feller writing method in Walloon) for exemple:

In touille chés poérions décopès aveuc chés us au lait, du sé et pi du poève. Ch'est coér pu boin si oz aveu foaite rissoler un molé chés poérions din un molé d'bure édvant d'touiller.

Here you have not a lot of apostrophises (it was in the old writing method <<phonetic orthography>> that many apostrophises were used)
