It's a while Persian Wikipedia has gone on the globe in main portal. Eventhough, it's a nuisance for Persian speakers to see a Persian text with western Arabic numerals as 680 000 + مقاله. Please convert the numerals to eastern Arabic numerals. A recent survey in Persian Wikipedia shows that it's not acceptable for Persian speakers to use western Arabic numerals.

For some languages it is common to write in their indigenous numerals in some special cases e.g. Chinese numerals are more common in vertical text but for Persian, Persian numerals is the only accepted form.

We want that the numerals along with Persian text be changed into Persian numerals in all main portals (Wikipedia, Wikibooks, Wikiquote, ...). --Doostdar (talk) 06:22, 27 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • Weak oppose My problem with this is that the multilingual portals are supposed to be at least a bit comprehensible to everyone. The identity of the language itself can be handled well enough through a mouse-over "tool tip". (See the Wiktionary portal, for example, although I would potentially have "Nihongo" changed to "Nihongo/Japanese".) But what is clear to everyone is that the little number by each entry is the number of articles on that project. And pretty much everyone can read the Arabic numerals. Not everyone can read the Persian numbers. So if you really want to insist on this, then the "tool tip" just has to include the number in Arabic numerals also. @StevenJ81: English numerals are not comprensible to everyone as Persian numerals. In general, English numerals are not legible for a literate person who knows writing in Persian unless he/she is good at English. You can not find any Persian text with English numerals. All numerals are in the form ۰ - ۱ - ۲ - ۳ - ... In other words, a web page written in Persian but with English numerals is something strange for most Persian speakers. Even number pads of telephones are in Persian not English. --Doostdar (talk) 08:34, 11 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Comments

[edit]
  • The above-mentioned Wikipedia main page is multilingual. The section about each Wikipedia page is written it own Wikipedia language: plwiki section in Polish, enwiki section in English, zhwiki section in Chinese, etc. I Support Support fawiki section using Persian numerals, but I cannot see any appropriate section on this page. Maybe, we should wait until fawiki appears among 12 largest Wikipedia sites? Ankry (talk) 17:31, 29 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Ankry: You can see some Persian Projects in the main page like Wikibooks and Wikiquote. Persian Wikipedia was previously on the globe. --Doostdar (talk) 08:41, 30 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I support using Persian/Arabic/Hebrew numbering for these project page number reports if the communities wish so. Ankry (talk) 09:21, 30 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Ankry: In Persian, Persian numbers are used but in Hebrew, Korean, Russian, etc. western arabic numbers are used:
Persian: ۱-۲-۳-...
Korean: 1-2-3-...
Japanese: 1-2-3-...
French: 1-2-3-...

@Doostdar: I meant arabic umbers for wikisource (if numbers appear again there). Hebrew indeed use western arabic. Ankry (talk) 19:40, 3 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I think this proposal is unclear. Doostdar are you talking about changing the numerals for the persian translation of the portal, or for everyone that visits it, including Europeans and Americans?--Snaevar (talk) 12:18, 25 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Different scripts are used in the portal (eg. chinese script in the word "條目" meaning "encyclopedic article") and it is shown for anyone who visits the portal. In the same manner, Persian numerals are part of Persian script and should be used with Persian text in the portal. --Doostdar (talk) 00:30, 27 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Doostdar In that case, just post an new task on phabricator, link there to your persian conseus and tag it with "Wikimedia-Portals". The developers there are the ones maintaining this portal. You might not need an conseus from meta.--Snaevar (talk) 01:34, 27 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Snaevar: The previous survey was only for "use of numerals in Perisan wikipedia articles" not all projects and the Wikimedia portals. --Doostdar (talk) 07:03, 27 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
