Goals[edit]

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went?
Yes, I did meet the set goals for this project to a very large extent and I would say I was happy with the way the project went.

Outcome[edit]

Please report on your original project targets. Please be sure to review and provide metrics required for Rapid Grants.

Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
Number of photos uploaded to Wikipedia (60) Over a hundred photos were uploaded to Wikipedia, while 57 photos were uploaded to Commons The metrics dashboard could not track photo uploads on Wikipedia, however through the edit summary of each participant, we were able to track the number of photos added to Wikipedia by each participant.
Number of participants (30) 17 participants A good number of prospective participants were students of University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Unfortunately, the program date coincided with an impromptu fumigation exercise embarked on by the school management which mandated the students to go on break the weekend preceding the program. Although some of them were part of the online training, they couldn't be added to the dashboard as editors because they were not yet well grounded on the basics of editing on Wikipedia.
Number of new editors (20) Nine (9) new editors were present at the physical event. The reason for this shortfall is same with the explanation given above for the number of participants.
Number of articles improved with photos (60) 88 articles were improved with photos This was achieved by the commitment of the the old editors and the great enthusiasm shown by the new editors.

Learning[edit]

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?

The execution of the project was quite seamless and there was great interest on the part of the participants, especially the new editors because the project major objective which was uploading photos to Wikipedia is quite exciting and easy to execute.

  • What did not work so well?

The major challenges encountered in executing the project was internet access in the project venue. Network coverage was quite poor and it constituted a little challenge to most of the participants.

  • What would you do differently next time?

To forestall internet hitches, a good router will be made available, probably with a back-up for good internet access.

Anything else[edit]

Anything else you want to share about your project?
I wish to appreciate the grant committee for granting me approval to facilitate this project and giving all necessary support within their bounds. The project was a great success and I hope we collaborate more to execute more projects in the near future. A downside to the execution of this project was the meagre fund approved for the project. A lot of brainstorming had to be done to finetune the expenditure to meet the released fund. Also, most of the participants expressed displeasure in the refreshment and little gift tokens presented. Although, being a Wikipedia editor is a voluntary activity that attracts no remuneration, some form of appreciative gestures will go a long way in arousing the interest of many to being part of this great community. The participants opted that the gift for top participants be monetized to at least cover for their transportation fare to the venue. If little tokens can be presented for such in subsequent projects, it will go a long way in motivating the participants.

Thanks you for the privilege to serve the community in this capacity and I hope to do more as situations demand.
